Arsenal's need for a striker has been a constant discussion for what feels a lifetime. With the Gunners who will probably miss a Premier League title for a third consecutive season, the calls for a new sniper at the Emirates have lately deafening.
Many candidates, ranging from Alexander Isak to Benjamin Sesko, have recently been spoken as the pressure on Mikel Arteta and the Arsenal Hierarchy to take action. Well, it seemed as if they took a step in the right direction at the weekend.
On Sunday, reports emerged that the Gunners have drawn a 'strong interest' in the sporty Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres, who this season has the goals for the Primeira Liga leaders.
The new sports director of Arsenal, Andrea Berta, whose appointment has been confirmed by the club on Sunday, is supposed to keep Gyokeres high intensive and will lead to an indictment to acquire his signature.
Isak had previously been the conversation of the city in Noord -Londs with Arteta who was 'a big fan' (who is not?), But Newcastle apparently has no plans to have Gyoke's colleague Swede Tyneside left.
While Isak has contracted the Premier League this season, and then, for the Magpies, the statistics of Sofascore show that Gyokeres has surpassed his countryman in various departments.
The sporty striker has yielded a gigantic 42 goals in so many games in all competitions in all competitions, while Isak has found the back of the net on 19 fewer occasions.
The Newcastle –man played nine games less because he is not involved in European competition, but even then he scores at a slower pace.
Gyokeres thinks it is just every 80 minutes, while Isak scored every 113 minutes. Now it's not like the Geordie Forward has a bad record, right? He is one of the most popular qualities in football. But it just shows how often his countryman scores.
The former Coventry striker also has a higher target conversion rate than Isak – 29 percent to 27 percent – and he has a superior great probability conversion, with 57 percent of Gyokeres who leaves the 56 percent of Isak.
The closest competitor of Gyokees in terms of statistics also comes from a competition outside the top five in Europe. Victor Osimhen's impressive season on loan in Galatasaray has seen him score goals for fun, but simply not as regularly as Arsenal's supposed new interest.
The 26 goals of Osimhen are impressive, but do not come close to the record of Gyokers while he has scored every 94 minutes, which is more often than Isak, but not the big Swede.
Arsenal has also put Sesko, who has 17 goals this season in 37 games, and although he is five years younger than the 26-year-old Gyokeres, the statistics show that he is much more inconsistent and only scores every 158 minutes.
The Gunners also made a shock bid for Ollie Watkins from Aston Villa in January, and the 29-year-old is one of the strikers that have one statistics about Gyokees. A rarity.
Watkins has 12 assists in all competitions this campaign, one more than the sporty man. However, he has scored a mammoth 28 goals less, and with the gunners who are looking for a goal scorer, she can simply make the side of Gyokees – only a feeling.
Now, although the ex-Brighton man has proven that he is statistically much better than several of Europe's top strikers this season, how is he when he takes place against the current attackers of Aresenal?
The answer is: pretty good. Gyokees has 33 more target involvement than Kai Havertz, in just eight more matches. The German managed only 15 goals in all competitions before his hamstring injury.
In the meantime, Gabriel Jesus is even further removed from Gyokeres that he only scored seven times in 27 games.
The need of Arsenal for a striker has been all too clear this season and the statistics show exactly what we already know.
While Gyokees did not play in the Premier League, his 85 goals speaks in 92 games since he reached Sporting at Sporting in 2023.
