Storm Darragh causes Merseyside derby postponement, when could it be replayed?

Everton vs Liverpool has been postponed following weather warnings caused by Storm Darragh, but when can the Merseyside derby be played again?

The Merseyside derby – the last to be played at Goodison Park – was called off on Saturday morning as rain and strong winds lashed Britain, putting the area under an orange weather alert.

And as things stand, the Saturday Night Football match between Man Utd and Nottingham Forest will go ahead. Man Utd said they will continue to engage with authorities ahead of the 5.30pm kick-off live on Sky Sports.

Merseyside Police advised against all non-essential travel in the region on Saturday, with an amber weather warning in place.

A statement from Everton said: “We apologize for any inconvenience caused and thank the supporters for their understanding. While we realize this will be a major disappointment for supporters, the safety of fans, staff and players is of the utmost importance.

“All tickets purchased for the original match remain valid for the rescheduled match.”

Liverpool's statement added: “We realize this will be very disappointing for supporters, but the safety of fans, staff and players is of the utmost importance.”

When can the Merseyside derby be rescheduled?

The new date for Everton versus Liverpool will likely depend on whether Arne Slot's side finish in the top eight of the Champions League. They are currently at the top of the new 36 club table.

This would guarantee them a place in the round of 16, meaning they will bypass the knockout rounds to be played on February 11/12 and February 18/19, 2025.

It would mean the match could be played midweek before Liverpool return to European competition, with the round of 16 starting on March 4/5 and March 11/12, 2025.

If the Reds fail to finish in the top eight, fixture dates will be further restricted, as will their progress to the latter stages of the Champions League.

Another possible option could also be the week starting April 21, which would be sandwiched between the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final and the first leg of the semi-final.
