Diogo Jota has hinted that a new Liverpool deal for Trent Alexander-Arnold could be close.
The future of the Reds right-back, whose contract expires this summer, has left fans sweating over the prospect of his departure, especially with Real Madrid among his potential suitors. However, a telling comment from Jota suggests that a new deal is in fact in the pipeline.
When quizzed on Sky Sports about what Christmas present he could get the 26-year-old, Jota replied with a grin: “Paper and a pen so he can sign his new contract.”
His laugh, shared by the interviewer, led supporters to speculate about a new twist in the Alexander-Arnold contract saga. One said: “Is it delusional to think Diogo Jota wouldn't joke about Trent's contract unless he's more likely to sign a new contract?”
Another asked: “Can we really expect that? [a] Trent contract in the form of a Christmas gift on Christmas Day? A third wondered: “Does Jota know something we don't?”
A fourth said: “Diogo belongs to all of us. Come on man, you know what to do.” And another added: “Jota deserves a new contract for this alone.”
Alexander-Arnold recently opened up about his future ambitions amid speculation about his future. Speaking on the Men in Blazers podcast, he said: “Obviously winning more trophies, but on a personal level, building a legacy is something that is important.
“I'm talked about in the highest regard, especially after you've finished. If in 10, 15 years' time I'm talked about as one of the best right-backs, or the best right-back, then that's what I'm playing for now.” and use it as motivation.”
Despite the ongoing rumors linking him with Real Madrid, the Liverpool-born player remains focused on the Reds. He said: “I've been a fan, I know the emotions in the game.
“I have people around me who are all fans, so of course I probably see it and am more open to it than other players because I have a lot more connections who love the club. But whether I feel it more or less , I don't know.”
While there is renewed optimism over Alexander-Arnold's future, the contract situations of Mohamed Salah and Van Dijk remain uncertain, with the experienced duo yet to sign new deals of their own.
