Amorim takes brutal swipe at Ed Sheeran as admitting pundit ‘is the real star’
RUBEN AMORIM has taken revenge on Ed Sheeran for landing his Sky TV interview last weekend, claiming he was standing next to the 'real star' in Roy Keane.
Sheeran has sold more than 150 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling musicians of all time.
He is also an Ipswich fan and was clearly a little giddy after his side earned a creditable draw at home to Manchester United on Sunday.
He blundered during Sky's post-match interview on the pitch with new Manchester United boss Amoim, who was questioned by Kelly Cates, Roy Keane, Izzy Christiansen and Jamie Redknapp.
Amorim looked less than impressed after overseeing a poor United performance to draw 1-1 as the relegation-threatened Suffolk side took a second-minute lead.
Sheeran tried to communicate with Redknapp before Cates told him they were interviewing Amorim.
Sheeran looked at Amorim and said: 'I don't think he wants to talk to me'.
Asked about the embarrassing situation ahead of United's Europa League match against Bodo Glimt tomorrow, Amorim put Sheeran in his place.
He said: “Here you are used to that, in Portugal it is different.
“For me it was nothing. I was with Roy Keane, he's a real star, it was really okay.”
Sheeran apologized on social media and admitted he felt 'a bit ab******'.
Amorin has put the Sheeran debacle behind him and is now focusing on keeping his attackers, including Marcus Rashford, firing on all cylinders.
Rashford heralded the new era under Amorim with a goal inside two minutes at Ipswich on Sunday, before the team slumped to a miserable 1-1 draw.
Now new boss Amorim says it is up to Rashford to take the first steps to get back to his best form before he can start helping him.
Amorim said: “We will try to find the right solution for him, as well as for the other players.
But he has to be Marcus first and foremost, to try to get back to that moment and then he will get all the help from the staff, the club and the fans.
“Because he's a Manchester United boy. But he has to be the first to want it.”
Amorim played Rashford as a number nine through the middle from the start at Portman Road, while placing strikers Rasmus Hojlund and Jushua Zirkzee on the bench.
However, Amorim put an end to any ideas that a permanent role could mean a permanent role for Rashford as he prepared to put him back on the wing for tomorrow night's Europa League clash with Bodo Glimt.
He said: “That position is not the best for him, especially in a match like this.
“We have to kick with high pressure, we have to kick the ball so often and it was like he was fighting two giants.
“We have to find the right solutions for him and other players.”
United's lack of goals has been a problem for some time.
Last season they were joint-lowest scorers in the top half of the table with Crystal Palace with just 57 goals.
This season, United are in twelfth place and only three teams in the league have fewer than thirteen goals.
Rashford is their current top scorer with five, while Zirkzee and Hojlund have just one each.
And Amorim admits the lack of goals is a problem.
He said: “Of course that is a concern, but I think we have to improve as a team.
“Because we have quality players who can score so many goals.
“But you felt it in the second half on Sunday, we had control of the ball, but we were not dangerous.
“Maybe because we worked on the build all week and the rest didn't work.
“We will try to improve as a team and Rasmus, Josh and Rash will score more goals.
“Even Bruno (Fernandes) needs to score more goals! Amad needs to be better around goal.
“All these guys have to improve and we can score so many goals.
“We have to improve as a team and these players can score goals.”
