Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis enters talks to buy iconic club

Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis is interested in adding iconic Brazilian side Vasco da Gama to his club.

Greek businessman Marinakis is keen to expand his team portfolio, which already includes Forest, Olympiacos and Rio Ave – with Vasco among the clubs he is currently eyeing.

It is believed that initial talks over a potential deal, which would see Marinakis acquire a controlling stake in the South American club, are underway but are still far from being completed.

Nevertheless, the potential deal raises the prospect of one of the most recognizable clubs in the world coming under Marinakis' control.

Former Arsenal sporting director Edu, who played for Vasco's domestic rivals Corinthians, will join Marinakis' team in a global football role, likely to play an influential role at Vasco if the takeover is successful.

Vasco was previously owned by 777 Partners, who once attempted a takeover at Everton.

Some of the most recognizable Brazilian players of all time have played for Vasco, including Romario, Bebeto and Mazinho.

Marinakis already has solid connections in Brazil – Danilo and Murillo both joined from Campeonato Brasileiro in recent seasons.
