Matt Serra made Georges St-Pierre feel like an 'idiot'

At UFC 69, on April 7, 2007, at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, USA, Georges St-Pierre succumbed to possibly the biggest setback in MMA history.

On a night the sport will never forget, Matt Serra delivered several devastating blows to the legend before forcing him to submit to attacks.

In retrospect, after coming out of the match, St-Pierre knew exactly what went wrong and felt foolish for making such a mistake.

However, he is completely okay with the decision he made to tap out.

In an interview last weekend with Theo Von, he said: “I tapped strikes and I'm not afraid to say it, because there's something in our sports people that says, 'You tapped strikes – you resign. But man, it's a sport; we are not at war.

“Matt Serra really surprised me because I was more concerned about his ground game than his standup. When he caught me, I remember, I got emotional because I wanted to give it back to him right away.

“I got into a brawl like an idiot. If you are bewildered, you are not accurate because you are dizzy. He was accurate and hit very hard.

“Because I didn't know where I was, I tapped out. I'd rather save myself for another day.”

Georges St-Pierre Gives an Interesting Explanation for Why He Turned Down an Offer to Fight the UFC's Nate Diaz

St-Pierre learned his mistakes from the first clash, overcame the adversity in his own way and defeated Serra in the rematch.

The win helped cement the grappler as one of the best to ever do it. And even though he's retired now, his fans would still love to see him return to the cage.

And in recent years, that almost happened, when the icon received a huge bid to face Nate Diaz.

But the 43-year-old has now explained why he turned it down.
