Emma Hayes: Stress of Chelsea job made me ‘unwell’ by the end, says United States women’s head coach

Emma Hayes revealed that at the end of her time as Chelsea's boss she felt “unwell” due to the stress of her job.

Hayes, who ended her 12-year reign with the Blues to become head coach of the US women's national team, is back in London as her new side prepares for Saturday's friendly with England at Wembley.

The 48-year-old, who guided Chelsea to a fifth consecutive Women's Super League title in May, opened up about the toll the job took on her health before she made the move to international management.

Speaking in Camden about the benefits of international football, Hayes told reporters on Monday: “I don't have to sacrifice the things that have made me healthy. I didn't feel healthy at the end, I even felt unwell at the end of my life.” time at Chelsea.

“It wasn't pressure, it was the stress and the toll it took on me, and going through menopause was even harder.

“To get on top of all these things, I got my mojo back and my smile and joy back that I didn't know I lost.”

Hayes guided the U.S. to Olympic gold in Paris this summer and Saturday's match will be the first time she faces Sarina Wiegman's Lionesses.

Hayes admitted it would be strange to face players she was “at war with,” but said the occasion was strictly business.

“I'm looking forward to seeing Sarina,” she said. “Of course I have to experience a weird moment when the anthems are played. I hum along to it (God Save the King) being the English person that I am, but also the same for the American one because I love both anthems.

“After that weird moment and running into players I've been at war with, things are picking up. I hope it's an entertaining game and a sellout.”

Chelsea captain Millie Bright is among the Blues players set to face their former coach.

“Millie Bright is a special person in my life and she feels like a little sister,” Hayes added.

“We spent many years building Chelsea, winning titles and seeing her in England. She is someone who will remain in my life even after this football match.

“I'm looking forward to seeing her.”
