Celtic Women 2-3 Rangers Women: Chelsea Cornet’s second-half strike settles thrilling Old Firm game
Rangers Women secured a dramatic 3-2 win at Celtic Women to extend their lead over their Old Firm rivals to four points in the SWPL.
Substitute Chelsea Cornet's lobbed strike twelve minutes from time decided what had been an enthralling match at New Douglas Park, with Rangers twice pushed back from leading positions.
Rangers took the lead through Rio Hardy and Katie Wilkinson, but Celtic leveled each time through Caitlin Hayes and then Saorise Noonan, before Cornet sealed the win. They are second, a point behind Glasgow City, who won 6–1 at Queens Park.
The visitors got a bit of luck for the opener four minutes in, when Hardy's strike from the edge of the box took a deflection and headed over wrong-footed Celtic goalkeeper Kelsey Daughterty to put them ahead.
Celtic equalized just before half-time when Hayes headed in at the back post from Emma Louise Lawton's cross.
Rangers regained their lead through Katie Wilkinson's penalty just after the hour mark after Charlie Devlin went down in the penalty area under a challenge from Shannon McGregor.
Celtic boss Elana Sadiku was sent off after the incident, receiving a booking for her initial reaction to the decision and then receiving another for sarcastically clapping referee Stacey Fullicks.
That didn't stop her side from fighting back as Noonan made it 2-2 from a free-kick that narrowly evaded Rangers goalkeeper Jenna Fife in the 67th minute.
But Cornet came off the bench to settle the game, latching on to a loose clearance from Daugherty before dropping the ball over the Celtic goalkeeper's head in the final quarter of the match.
