Lee Carsley advices Tuchel: watch out for service stations and WEST HAM fans
LEE CARSLEY told Thomas Tuchel to beware of coffee shop bores and West Ham fans accosting Jarrod Bowen.
New England boss Tuchel is unlikely to spend as much time on the highway as the level-headed Carsley did during his reign as head coach.
But the German won't be able to completely escape the 50 million wannabe English managers who all think they can do better.
Carsley said: “It makes me laugh that everyone has an opinion about the team.
“I'm on the road a lot, so I get the most advice at gas stations.
“Some of it is good, some of it is not so good. I seem to meet a lot of West Ham fans, very Jarrod heavy.
“It's mainly team selection. . . I was standing in line at a Starbucks and a guy was talking about the false nine and tactics after the Greece game. I just wanted a soy latte!”
Carsley will finally sit down with Tuchel, who will start in January after completing his six-match Nations League assignment against Ireland on Sunday.
He said: “I'm not sure I'll give Thomas much advice.
“He's in a better position than me in terms of the experience he's had and the staff he has.
“It will probably be more about the players, the personalities and the things you won't see on TV.
“I'm collecting a lot of thoughts, just like the rest of the staff.
“I fully expect to catch up with him after camp and hopefully we can leave the team in a good position.”
Carsley is not one to blow his own trumpet. But he clearly believes that if England win today he will have fulfilled a mission that goes beyond simply winning promotion to the top tier of the Nations League.
Carsley, who debuted six youngsters, said: “What we have tried to do is increase the number of players available for Thomas.
“It feels like the fans are really connected to the team. They like that it looks younger, it looks energetic, it looks fresh.”
And despite England reaching two European Championship finals and a World Cup semi-final under Gareth Southgate, something new was needed.
Carsley admits his ideas did not work in the 2-1 home defeat to Greece.
But he said: “It would have been quite easy to pick the team that played at the European Championship and go with the same players. But no matter how close we came, we still didn't win.
“To keep repeating the same thing and then expecting something different, I think we missed a trick.”
