Arsenal star called EPL flop of the season: ‘He’s stunk the place out’
Raheem Sterling has been labeled “one of the flops of the season” after breaking an early-season promise.
The England winger signed for Arsenal late in the summer transfer window, joining on a season-long loan from Premier League rivals Chelsea. But so far he has failed to reach the heights expected of him.
Sterling, 29, has made eight appearances for the Gunners, including just two starts. His only goal contributions came in the 5–1 win against League One side Bolton Wanderers in the Carabao Cup.
And ex-Premier League striker Stan Collymore believes he has been the worst signing of the season. Speaking to the Metro, he said: “Raheem Sterling has been a huge disappointment.
“He came in and said he would give the club his best work, but that hasn't happened. He has arguably left a bad impression so far and he is definitely one of the flops of the season because he promised his best work to do at Arsenal.
“He is an experienced player who has won everything there is to win. He was expected to take the dressing room to the next level, but he hasn't done that.”
And while Sterling has disappointed so far, Collymore isn't particularly impressed with Arsenal's other summer activities. The Gunners have also secured a major deal for former Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori after starring at the 2024 Euros.
And Collymore believes this deal has not lived up to expectations either. He added: “Arsenal have spent £42 million on Riccardo Calafiori, which has been a mildly disappointing move so far. He's had a few injuries, but he was meant to come in and be the guy.
A final complaint Collymore had was the decision to raise money for academy graduate Emile Smith Rowe. He completed a permanent move to Fulham in the summer, but Collymore believes he would have been a perfect player to step in during captain Martin Odegaard's long injury absence.
And although Collymore has rejected Arsenal's summer moves, it appears North London are pushing ahead with their plans for the January window. According to reports in Spain, the Gunners have contacted Real Madrid over a deal for playmaker Arda Guler.
Arsenal also appear to have moved ahead in the race for Bilbao star Nico Williams. They previously faced competition for the Barcelona wide man, but the Spanish giants are reportedly unable to meet his high wage demands.
