Amorim wants Man Utd players to be inspired by club’s history

Ruben Amorim wants his Manchester United players to be inspired by the club's history as he tries to bring the winning mentality back to Old Trafford.

Amorim, who took over at the Premier League club following the departure of Erik ten Hag, spoke in his first interview with the club after touring their home stadium.

The Portuguese tactician had visited Old Trafford earlier this week and met a group of supporters, as well as the women's team vice-captain, England star Ella Toone.

“If you come [to Old Trafford]it's so different. You see the trophies, you see the tragedy we have as a club. The history,” Amorim said.

The 39-year-old added that the way the club defied the odds to succeed under Matt Busby after the 1958 Munich air disaster should be a particular source of inspiration.

“I think it's important to put this kind of strength into our team. When the players come here, they have to do the stadium tour all the time. I think this is very important to do,” Amorim said.

“It's normal that if you don't win for years, you start to lose that feeling. So I think we have to get all the players to do the same, to get that feeling back.

“We haven't won the Premier League for a long time. But if you ask, United are the biggest club in England.

“So this is part of history, it's not now. So we have to address that, show that and try to win again.”

When asked what his football philosophy is, the former midfielder said it all comes down to being a team.

“For me, the team is the most important thing. And when you work as a team, the talent will shine individually,” he said.

“But if I have to explain the importance of everything, it's the character, the way we fight, the way we play, and we have to have an identity.

“Everyone wants to win, and I want to win with my players, with the fans, but with one identity and one idea.”

Amorim, who will take charge of the Red Devils for the first time in their Premier League appearance against Ipswich Town at Portman Road on November 24, also insisted he has never considered moving to another club.

“I'm really honored to be here. It was my only choice because I think I really feel how big this club is. And then I will do everything for the team. I will defend my players if I have to, the whole time.” , to everyone,” said the former Portugal international.

“I will try to do everything I can to get this club to the place where it belongs, and I strongly believe we will succeed.”

Amorim will have his work cut out for him at Old Trafford, where United are languishing in 13th place in the Premier League with 15 points from 11 games.

They also face an uphill battle in the Europa League, having only recorded their first win against Greek champions PAOK under interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy in their fourth match last week.
