Deschamps to initiate crunch captaincy talks with Mbappé as Konaté’s stock grows

Will Kylian Mbappé (25) retain his status as France captain before 2025? It remains to be seen after the Real Madrid forward's no-shows during the two previous international breaks with Les Bleus. L'Equipe understands that Les Bleus boss Didier Deschamps will exchange words with the former PSG striker over his desire to continue wearing the skipper's armband. The manager – himself a former France captain – reportedly wants to hear from Mbappe as to whether the captaincy has become a burden too heavy for him to bear, and whether or not wearing the skipper's armband will affect his time with his France teammates.

The outlet adds that Deschamps is aware of rumors that Mbappe is considering resigning as France skipper. Should Mbappe indicate his intention to remain France captain, there are few reasons to believe Deschamps will relieve him of his captaincy duties. However, if Mbappe confirms his intention to relinquish his status, Deschamps will choose another captain. Mbappé's successor is therefore expected to be one of Aurélien Tchouaméni (24), N'Golo Kanté (33) or Ibrahima Konaté (25), who all started as France captain in the past two months.

L'Equipe understands that the Liverpool centre-back's leadership qualities have grown within the France backroom staff, amid a change in dressing room dynamics during the November international break. Konaté led France to a 3-1 away win against Italy on Monday. The outlet understands that Konaté would be ideal to captain France should he make himself an undisputed starter at Les Bleus.

The same can be said about Tchouaméni. The Bordeaux academy graduate is far from his best at Real Madrid, and Manu Koné's (23) spirited performance on Monday will certainly give Deschamps food for thought. As for Kante, he remains a popular figure for his teammates and the France staff, but his age and introverted personality may put him out of the running to become France captain in the long run.
