Dustin Poirier updates on UFC retirement fight as ‘fake news’ spreads about potential opponent

Dustin Poirier's final chapter of his illustrious UFC career is about to come to fruition after updating his social media following.

UFC superstar Dustin Poirier wants at least one more fight before hanging up the gloves and bringing his storied career to an end. After seemingly retiring following a loss to Islam Makhachev at UFC 302, Poirier quickly changed that stance and isn't ready to retire from fighting just yet.

Poirier has plenty of opponents for his final UFC appearance, including a possible trilogy fight with Justin Gaethje. A third fight with BMF titleholder Max Holloway is another possibility after Holloway committed to a full-time move up to lightweight following a fall to Ilia Topuria.

Poirier went from a UFC journeyman to a pay-per-view standout in the Octagon in just a few years. His two wins over Conor McGregor in 2021 have made him one of the top draws in mixed martial arts today.

Since Poirier teased at least one more fight inside the Octagon, many opponents have been suggested, including a possible clash with Rafael Fiziev. Earlier this week it was reported that the UFC Poirier vs. Fiziev was eyeing for UFC 313 in March.

Dustin Poirier shuts down Rafael Fiziev fight rumors

Amid speculation about his next fight, Poirier took to social media to update fans on when he will return to the Octagon.

“I thought I had one, but I was still working on the final,” Poirier responded.

After another fan inquired about a rumored booking between Poirier and Fiziev, Poirier quickly suppressed that story.

“Fake news,” Poirier said.

As of this writing, Fiziev and Poirier have no feuds in the works. Fiziev has not fought since suffering a serious knee injury against Mateusz Gamrot last year.

Assuming Poirier's comments about Fiziev hold up, he'll look to another top name for his UFC comeback. In recent months, Poirier has expressed a desire to fight in his home state of Louisiana for his UFC final, although the UFC has not booked an event there since 2015.

Dustin Poirier's retirement fight was focused on 2025

Dan Hooker is another name to watch in the Poirier fight match. Poirier and Hooker fought in one of the wildest fights of the 2020 series, with Poirier earning a split-decision victory.

Hooker rose into the lightweight Top 5 by defeating Gamrot in a victory at UFC 305. A rematch between Hooker and Poirier could be intriguing for both sides.

Although Poirier has not won an outright UFC title during his career, he is a safe bet to enter the UFC Hall of Fame at some point. He has victories in recent years against the likes of Michael Chandler, Anthony Pettis and Gaethje.

Poirier's most recent win came against Benoit Saint-Denis at UFC 299 in March. He bounced back big time after falling to Gaethje with a head kick knockout at UFC 291.

The first quarter of 2025 appears to be the target time frame for Poirier's next fight. In the meantime, speculation about who he will meet will continue, although one name can be safely removed from the mix.
