Alex Pereira weighs in on the new pound-for-pound rankings update as he backs Jon Jones

After UFC 309 last Saturday, the new rankings update has once again sparked controversy as Jon Jones is still unable to claim the top spot.

The UFC pound-for-pound rankings have been a serious topic of discussion this year, as UFC CEO Dana White has continually beat the drum that Jon Jones should be in the top spot.

After returning to the Octagon last Saturday at UFC 309, 'Bones' scored an impressive victory over the consensus greatest heavyweight of all time, Stipe Miocic, sending him a third-round submission.

Alex Pereira comments on the pound-for-pound rankings update

The main argument against the 37-year-old being pound-for-pound number one is that he has not been active enough in recent years.

Despite picking up another win last Saturday, Jones has yet to take the top spot in the rankings with next Tuesday's recent update.

Current lightweight champion Islam Makhachev remains at the top of the list despite not having fought since UFC 302 last June.

Dropped one spot to third is light heavyweight king and current star of the UFC, Alex Pereira. 'Poatan' has been the most active champion this year, having fought three times and scored three extremely impressive KOs.

Ahead of Jones' comeback, the biggest consensus of all time admitted he would like to fight Pereira next, rejecting the challenge from interim champion Tom Aspinall.

Following Jones' performance and after failing to regain first place, Pereira commented on the update.

“Just this change would make me happy,” Pereira posted on his Instagram Story, suggesting Jones and Makhachev switch places.

Dana White left fuming after the pound-for-pound rankings update

After beating the drum all year that Jones is the greatest fighter of all time and should be number one in the pound-for-pound rankings, the UFC boss was left seething with the recent update.

White has recently claimed that he plans to overhaul the current rankings system, blaming the MMA media members who make up the rankings panel and labeling them as “clueless” on several occasions.

He has teased several times that he is considering letting artificial intelligence determine the rankings, but he still hasn't figured out a way to solve the problem.

That said, in response to the recent update, White enlisted the help of Mark Zuckerberg to resolve it once and for all, after finding out that Jones had only risen to second place on the list.

“I gotta get rid of these CLOWNS!! Mark Zuckerberg, let's get this AI deal done ASAP!!!” White said in a post on his Instagram Story.
