Barca unlikely to sign Lewandowski successor in near future – extension on table

There has been talk recently that Barcelona are considering signing a top striker sooner or later, knowing that Robert Lewandowski will turn 37 next season. But that possibility is currently remote.

That's according to Sport, who say Lewandowski has no plans to go anywhere anytime soon. A fourth year of his contract is conditional on the Polish striker playing 50% of Barcelona's games this season, a figure he is expected to achieve. However, the veteran wants to continue beyond his contract and wants to extend his contract until 2027, when he will turn 38 at the end of that season.

Despite the debate over whether they should anticipate the arrival of a top striker, Barcelona are backing the idea. They believe it would be too difficult to accommodate two top strikers such as Sporting CP's Lewandowski and Viktor Gyokeres and one would end up on the bench. The longer Lewandowski lasts, provided he maintains the numbers he currently leads, the better for Barcelona: they want more time to get their finances in order to pursue a top nine.

The idea of ​​Erling Haaland is a distant dream at the moment, and Gyokeres is relatively cheap for a top striker, something they can't count on every year. Sporting director Deco is reportedly still keen to add help for Lewandowski, and the signing of Jonathan David would be another matter.
