The £173million Chelsea team that Enzo Maresca can thank for Club World Cup entry including ‘bomb squad’ member

Chelsea was crowned champion of the world after the thrashing of Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in the club World Cup final on Sunday.

Cole Palmer was on goal twice before he had an assist for the new boy Joao Pedro in a first half of Blitz against the winners of the Champions League 2025.

But ironically, the Blues victory in the Metlife Stadium of New Jersey for 80,000 fans, including US President Donald Trump, can be traced back on the efforts of a £ 173 million team of 11 stars.

The qualification of Chelsea for this tournament was probably one of the last things involved in the club when Kai Havertz scored the winner in the Champions League final against Manchester City in 2021.

Yet, led by Thomas Tuchel, that team unconsciously laid the foundation for the Stamford Bridge outfit to be called world champions four years later.

And yet a lot has happened since then, with only one star that survived from that starting XI in Portugal to the start XI in America under Enzo Maresca.

The only survivor is Reece James, who has gone from looting wing-back to midfield Dynamo and is now the club captain.

Opposite Wing-Back Ben Chilwell is the only other player who is still in the club, although he has been considered surplus the requirements since last summer and has been included in the so-called “Bomb Squad” of players trying to sell the club.

All others have left, whether through the transfer or free desk.

The team actually remained together for the next season, for three stars; Timo Werner (£ 25 million), Jorginho (£ 12m) and Antonio Rudiger (free), left for Weiden New after the arrival of owner Todd Boehly.

With a lot of revolution outside the field in front of the club, five more of the team, including the winning goals score and helping a few oats and Mason Mount for a combined £ 120 million in Arsenal and Manchester United respectively.

Goalkeeper Edouard Mendy also left that year to go to Al-Ahli for £ 16 million, while fan favorites N'Golo Kante and Cesar Azpilicueta have joined Al-Entihad and Atletico Madrid to free transfers.

Last summer, the most recent permanent departure of the Champions League saw -winning team when Thiago Silva finally called time on his blues career to return home to Brazilian side luminense.

Van Chilwell is expected to follow this summer after he has been on loan to Crystal Palace during the winter transfer window.

But in terms of the current blues team, they remain progress with jumps and boundaries and you would not bet they will be challenging for the Premier League next year.

They have already completed a £ 51 million deal to add Jamie Gittens, with Noni Madueke who joins Arsenal in a £ 52 million deal.
