The beginning of the end of Joan Laporta?

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has certainly lived on the edge during his second term at the club, but it looks like he's about to fall this time. The debacle surrounding the registration of Dani Olmo and Pau Victor, which could leave Hansi Flick without both players for the rest of the season, threatens to cause a political earthquake at the club.

Laporta was elected president again in March 2021, after Josep Maria Bartomeu was removed from power by a vote of no confidence from members. However, he could now suffer the same fate. In Olmo's case, their signing, who cost them €55 million from RB Leipzig, could leave for free after just six months with all the €48 million he is owed from his six-year contract if he does not remain registered and chooses to do so . Barcelona think they have done enough to sign him, but so far that remains to be seen, and if they are wrong it will be a €103 million mistake that will fall squarely on his shoulders.

According to Diario AS, his political rivals are organizing in the background to present this as the latest proof that he is not the best president to lead the club. Victor Font, who stood against him in 2020 as part of the Si al Futur group, and Joan Camprubi, who has formed another rival group called 'Som un Clam', are organizing press conferences to address the issue. In some cases, a possible vote of no confidence against Laporta is being discussed.

For a vote of no confidence to take place, the motion must collect signatures from 15% of the members to put the issue to a popular vote. That vote must then produce at least a two-thirds majority (66.6%) to remove the current president in charge.
