The biggest winners and losers at the end of the 2024/25 Premier League campaign

Liverpool lifted the Premier League trophy on a jubilant Anfield when the curtain arrived on Sunday at the 2024/25 season.

AFP Sport looks at the winners and losers of the campaign:

Winners

Liverpool

Champions for a record-similar 20th time, Liverpool was in a class for a large part of the season when the men of Arne Slot ended the title with four games.

Inspired by the sensational form of Mohamed Salah, who was both the top goalscorer of the competition and the assists provider, the Reds made the loss of Talismian boss Jurgen Klopp 12 months ago.

Klopp was in the crowd in Anfield to greet the champions on Sunday, while Slot started all his plans to build from a power position.

Trent Alexander-Arnold leaves a big hole behind to fill, but Liverpool is said to be close to deals for Bayer Leverkusen-Duo Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz, as well as Milos Kerkez van Bournemouth.

Newcastle

The Magpies provided fifth place and a place in next season's Champions League despite a shock 1-0 home defeat against Everton on the last day of the campaign.

However, a return to the European Elite competition was only the icing on the cake for fans on Tyneside after Newcastle ended the waiting of 56 years to win a big trophy.

The men of Eddie Howe stuck Liverpool 2-1 in March to generate wild scenes of celebration for a city with one club with a huge following.

Alexander Isak hit the decisive goal in Wembley and played a major role in wearing Newcastle back to the Champions League, because only Salah scored more Premier League goals than the 23 of the Swede.

Crystal Palace

Palace had waited longer for silverware to beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final for the first major trophy of their 119-year history.

The Eagles also provided a club record Premier League points of 53 to end 12th despite a terrible start of the campaign.

The side of Oliver Glasner struggled early, partly because of having four members of the English team that reached the Euro 2024 final and played the role of the roller Jean-Philippe Mateta in the Run from France to the Silver Medal at the Olympic Games.

Palace won only one of their opening 13 games after a disturbed preseason, but only lost six of their last 25 in a run of form that would have seen them in the fight for the Champions League places if she replicated more than 38 games.

Losers

Manchester City

Everything other than the title after an unprecedented series of four consecutive Premier League crowns would have been a disappointment for the men of Pep Guardiola.

But the scale of their decline during a difficult winter sent shock waves through the division.

After losing Ballon d'Or Winner Rodri to injury, the previously all -victory defeated defender once in 13 games between the end of October and December.

Defeat against Palace in the FA Cup final concluded a first trophy -free campaign since Guardiola's first in England eight years ago.

City, however, recovered to end up at least as a third and to secure a 15th consecutive season in the Champions League.

Manchester United

There was no saving grace for United after the worst season of the club since they were banned in 1974.

Ruben Amorim apologized on Sunday for supporters for a “disaster” of a campaign in which United 15th was completed and did not qualify for Europe for the second time in 35 years.

The decision to maintain Erik ten Hag as a manager was quickly resolved when the Dutchman was fired in October.

But Amorim has only won seven of his 27 Premier League matches since in a club in disorder on and next to the field.

Defeat in the Europa League -Final against Tottenham, which cost United about £ 100 million in Champions League qualification, could have serious consequences for Amorim's ability to form the team in its image during the summer transfer window.

Promoted trio

Leicester, Ipswich and Southampton set an undesirable record as the trio of degraded clubs combined for a record low points of 59.

They were also the three clubs that were promoted from the championship last season.

Before the 2023/24 campaign, that was only once in the English history of top flight, in 1997/98.

Now it has happened in the past two seasons with growing concern about the competitive balance of the English top flight because of the growing wave between the Premier League and the second layer.
