‘The lads were in the trenches’ – Henderson lauds efforts of nine-man Palace

Dean Henderson described the efforts of Crystal Palace as “phenomenal” after they had become the first team in the Premier League history that won a competition after receiving two red cards.

Palace defeated Rivals Brighton 2-1 in Selhurst Park to continue their upward momentum under Oliver Glasner.

Jean-Philippe Mateta and Daniel Munoz hit on either side of Danny Welbeck's equalizer, but the drama really started in the 78th minute.

Eddie Nketiah received his second yellow card for a reckless challenge, followed by Marc Guehi in the 90th minute.

Palace had to navigate almost 14 minutes of the second half of the time, although their task was helped when Brighton's Jan Paul van Hecke was also sent for two bookable violations.

Palace goalkeeper Henderson told Premier League productions of the victory: “It was phenomenal. The boys were in the trenches at the end.

“Nine men go, you have to dig deep and build relationships. Nobody knew what positions they played, but they threw bodies in the way of Schoten.

“I am speechless. It's fantastic. This competition is huge for the fans. It means the same thing for us. We are happy.”

The Glasner team is now in the table for a maximum of 11, while since 1932-33 they have also completed their first competition doubles over Brighton.

“It's a huge victory for us. This victory is for our fans. We know how important it is for fans,” said Glasner.

“This derby had everything you like about football. It's not good for a manager! I am pretty exhausted, but it feels good.

“There was 12 minutes extra time, then you see 103 minutes, and you think,” Come on, how long do we play? ” Sometimes we train nine against 10 and eight. We fought and brought it home. “

Saturday's game was the first in the Premier League to contain three red cards since April 2013, when Southampton had sent two players away and opponents West Brom had one.

Fabian Hurzeler was left to regret Van Hecke's late mistake, which halved Brighton's numerical benefit.

He said to Premier League Productions: “It was very wild. We couldn't control it at the end and we couldn't find the right solution.

“The hunger was bigger from Crystal Palace. We made another foolish mistake and got the red card.

“We made too many easy mistakes. We were not aggressive enough, the hunger was not there. Why? We have to analyze this.”
