Ten players are on the final shortlist of nominees for The Best FIFA Men's Player, which was won by Lionel Messi last year.
Manchester City's Rodri Hernández and Real Madrid's Vinícius Júnior are expected to compete for this year's Best FIFA Men's Player award, which will be presented today at the 2024 edition of the top FIFA football awards.
FIFA will announce the winners of several individual awards at an event in the Qatari capital Doha, where the Intercontinental Cup final between Real Madrid and Pachuca will take place tomorrow. In addition to the Men's Player of the Year award, the awards include the Best FIFA Women's Player, The Best FIFA Men's Coach and The Best FIFA Women's Coach.
Who will be the best FIFA men's player?
While Barcelona and Spain's Aitana Bonmatí is heavily tipped to retain the Best Women's Player award, having already won back-to-back Women's Ballons d'Or in 2023 and 2024, the destination of the men's award appears less easy to predict. The only thing that can be said with any degree of confidence is that it will probably go to Rodri, who starred in Spain's victory at the 2024 European Championship, or to Vinícius, who played a crucial role in the fifteenth in 2023/2024 win the European Cup in Madrid.
In October, Rodri guided Vinícius to the 2024 Men's Ballon d'Or, where he managed just 41 points (1,170 to 1,129) in an extremely tight vote by a global jury of journalists. After learning on the day of the gala that he would be defeated by the Spanish midfielder, Vinícius boycotted the ceremony in Paris along with the entire Real Madrid delegation, amid claims from the club that it was “disrespected” by the Ballon d' Or organizers.
The finalists for the Best FIFA Men's Player award also include consecutive holder, Inter Miami and Argentina's Lionel Messi, who has won the award a record three times.
