Juve's American Star blooms in his new role at the Italian club and raises questions about his best position for the USMNT prior to the World Cup 2026.
Timothy Weah will be one of the most important players for the National Team of the United States, while preparing for the World Cup 2026 for home floor. Seen as one of the most dangerous attacking weapons in the Mauricio Pochettino team, he has taken the headlines at Juventus for a very different reason.
Originally a promising center forwards or right wing player in the Academy of Paris Saint-Germain, Weah settled in the Juventus of Thiago Motta as a right back. While injuries and lack of depth have forced the club's hand, his transition to a defensive role started under Massimiliano Allegri last season.
His switch to full-back has been a gradual process. Sometimes Motta has also experimented with Weston McKennie in the same position. After he had been left on the bench at the end of January for Juve's high -profile collision against Napoli, Weah has since started five consecutive games for the Bianconeri.
His first full-back experience came in the Champions League against Benfica (L, 0-2), followed by performances against Empoli (W, 4-1), Como (W, 2-1), PSV Eindhoven (W, 2- 1) and Inter Milan (W, 1-0). Although he had previously enjoyed regular playing time, this run marks the first time that he has completed the full 90 minutes in five consecutive games during the 2024-25 season.
Metamorphosis of Tim Weah
Weah's shift to a defensive role is even more striking considering his early careers numbers. At PSG he only scored two goals for the senior team, but both came when he was deployed as a center-to-offs SM Caen (3-0), to replace Neymar, and as Monaco (4-0), which the full match played. During his six -month loan in 2019 at Celtic, he added four goals and an assist to his count.
His time in Lille saw him settle as a winger on both flanks, where he recorded eight goals and eight assists between 2020 and 2023. Now, despite the irony of finding more regular minutes as a right back under Motta, Weah enjoys his best individual season to date: five goals and five assists about 27 performances in all competitions so far.
