Ange Postecoglou branded Timo Werner's performance as “unacceptable” and not “anywhere near the level” required in Tottenham's Europa League draw against Rangers.
Werner was replaced at half-time of the Europa League match against Ibrox by Dejan Kulusevski, who equalized with 15 minutes to go.
Rangers deservedly took the lead early in the second half through Hamza Igamane's strike, with Tottenham starting 18-year-old Archie Gray as a makeshift centre-back before bringing on another teenager in Lucas Bergvall with an hour to play.
Postecoglou's side are winless in their last five games and the former Celtic boss was furious with Werner's performance.
“He didn't play nearly at the level he should have,” Postecoglou said. 'When you have eighteen year olds [playing]it is not acceptable to me and I told Timo that. He is a senior German international.
“At the moment we are in it, it is not like we have many options. I want everyone to at least try to give the best of themselves. His performance in the first half was not acceptable.”
When asked how Werner pulled off the dressing, Postecoglou added: “Don't really know. It's not really a big concern. We need everyone, including him, to contribute because we don't have the have the depth to disregard people if they are performing poorly again.
“We need them to play their role, especially the seniors. When I ask younger guys to do big jobs, I expect a level of performance from some of the seniors, and that wasn't today.”
Werner joined Spurs on loan from RB Leipzig in January and subsequently extended his stay until the end of this season. He made nineteen appearances this season and scored one goal.
Kulusevski: Everyone needs to do more
Tottenham goalscorer Dejan Kulusevski in conversation with TNT Sports:
“Rangers played very well, we struggled a bit. We didn't play well enough to win the match. Rangers played a perfect match. It's a beautiful stadium, the fans helped them a lot.”
“I wanted to change something, make something happen and I succeeded once, but today not enough. It is always important to score, but we have to start winning games now. Sunday is the time to win.”
“Everyone needs to do a little more than we are doing now.”
Boyd: Were the Spurs trying?
Sky Sports' Kris Boyd:
“Philippe Clement will be the happier of the two managers. The financial gap between the two teams is absolutely enormous. That doesn't mean you can't get results, and Rangers showed that tonight.
“It took a great finish from Kulusevski as he gave Tottenham the equalizer, but Rangers caused problems all game long. They played really well and had some great individual performances. Nicolas Raskin was excellent in the center of the pitch, Jefte and Ridvan Yilmaz.
“Tottenham, at some points in the game you thought to yourself: 'Are they really trying? Are they working hard?' Because everything was so slow, even closing down the Rangers players, they just looked away.
“I understand that they have a lot of injuries, but that should give others the opportunity to show that they are good enough to be at the club and forget the injured ones.
“There are a lot of talented top players in the Tottenham team who are missing, but I didn't think they had done enough to win the game tonight.”
