Tommy Fury has been exposed again for pulling out of his fight with Darren Till over a joke during the launch press conference.
The boxing star is scheduled to return to the ring on January 18 against former UFC welterweight title challenger Till. However, after the Liverpool native made the tongue-in-cheek comment that he would kick his opponent in the head if he lost after a few rounds, Fury withdrew from the fight.
Now Till will face another opponent in his Misfits Boxing debut, while Fury is currently looking for another fight. He has called up Jake Paul, among others, but it seems unclear whether a rematch will take place.
Tommy Fury pulled out of Darren Till's fight due to kick concerns
After an explosive launch press conference where a brawl involving his father John Fury broke out, Tommy Fury looked more than ready for an exciting fight and build-up. However, earlier this month he announced he was withdrawing due to a comment from his rival about throwing a kick.
“I can't believe I'm writing this, but I will not be fighting Darren Till on January 18, 2025,” he wrote in a lengthy statement.

“The one simple reason is that Darren has stated time and time again that he does not want to play by professional boxing rules and that if he loses the fight he will resort to kicking and other stupid MMA tactics.
“I'm a professional boxer, I've been out of the ring for over a year and I wanted this to be a great BOXING fight for the fans. I wasted weeks at training camp.
“We are working hard to find a new opponent and date. I promise I will get a better opponent and fight better for you. Good news around the corner.”
Josh Thomson believes Tommy Fury didn't want to argue over Christmas
The decision to skip the fight has been derided by many in the fighting world, especially since Fury previously joked about elbowing KSI in their fight. And legendary MMA referee John McCarthy, along with former Strikeforce champion Josh Thomson, analyzed the decision on their show Weighing In.
Thomson believes Fury simply did not want to sacrifice his Christmas holiday for fight camp, and may look to reschedule the fight at a later date. “It would make for a good fight and a really fun fight,” he explained as he pushed for the match to be rescheduled.
“I hope they can work this all out, but if anything, even if it comes to fruition later, this is a good small step in promoting their fight… We're talking about it now, if they can set it up [at a later date]Maybe Tommy didn't want to fight on Christmas or New Years.
“Maybe he didn't want to train during this period, so what did he do? He probably said 'you know what? I am now canceling this fight and will renegotiate at the end of January.” He'll get himself back in shape and then they can fight for a while in March.”
John McCarthy attacks Tommy Fury over fight cancellation
McCarthy was not as sympathetic to Fury's cause as Thomson, feeling it was an absurd reason to withdraw from the fight. Till had a contractual clause that ensured that using illegal moves resulted in a fine of 100 percent of his wallet.
After Fury punched Till and called him an “idiot,” McCarthy clapped back by saying, “I think Tommy needs to look in the mirror.” Look, okay, this is a boxing match and that's fine, but he's sitting there saying he's worried about Darren Till's foul. Real?
“Just like every opponent you go against can't make a mistake? Or can't you claim 'oh, I'm going to do this'? He said Darren Till said he was going to take him down. Darren Till has never knocked anyone down in MMA.
“He said, 'I might do a high kick during the fight,' okay. And if he does, guess what's going to happen Josh? He's going to lose, the referee is going to disqualify him, it happened recently in a boxing fight where we had an MMA guy against a boxer, he got touched a little bit and he said 'f*** it' and handed him over.
“Then he lost and this is what people don't understand… When it happens where you have a committee in charge of it, not only do you lose, you don't get paid. Your money is held and they decide how much to give you.
“So not only do you lose, you lose your money and put yourself in a position where guys won't fight you anymore. So Darren Till is talking, making small talk to generate interest in the fight and put Tommy in a position where he has to say something back.
“Tommy Fury just ends up taking the whole bait, hook and everything and withdraws from the fight. I'm just going to say it now: you don't want to fight.
