Tony Young dead at 71: Man United pay heartwarming tribute to former star
Former Manchester United player Terrence Young has died aged 71, the club has confirmed.
Young, affectionately known as Tony, played 97 games for the Red Devils between 1969 and 1976 and was a key figure in the team that won promotion to the First Division in 1973-74.
That season, Young played 32 times under Tommy Docherty and scored one goal, against Chelsea.
A right-back by trade, he could also play on the right wing and also had spells at Charlton Athletic and York City after leaving United.
As part of their own tribute to their former star, United wrote: 'Our thoughts are with Tony's family and friends at this difficult time.'
Young was born in Urmiston, within five miles of Old Trafford and about two and a half miles from Carrington.
After joining the club in 1968, he made his debut at the age of 17 in August 1970, a year after turning professional, and was graduated No. 82 out of 251.
His former teammate of five years, Sammy McIlroy, led the tributes to a man he described as a 'real Manchester boy'.
'It is terribly sad to hear that he has passed away. I remember Tony had a huge reputation as a winger when he first joined the club and unlike others he seemed to thrive under pressure. He was a real Manchester boy – tough! He also trained like he played.
'Tony was actually a quiet personality. He made his breakthrough as a right winger, but showed his versatility and team ethics when he played a few games at right back.
'Tony was the kind of character that every group of players needs, and the kind of willing player that every manager loves.'
United's announcement on social media was met with many condolences, with many fans adding their wishes for youngsters to 'Rest In Peace'.
