Tottenham 3-1 Southampton: Saints relegated in record time with Spurs defeat

Southampton suffered the earliest relegation in the Premier League history After a Brennan Johnson double inspired Tottenham Hotspur in a comfortable victory in North Londs.

The forward Wales converted Djed Spence's Cut-Back in the 13th minute, before he held on to James Maddison's header over the defense to flicker in a second three minutes before half-time.

Mateus Fernandes answered in the 90th minute, but Mathys Tel claimed his first Spurs League goal with a penalty in added time to ensure that Saints became the first Premier League side that was banned with seven more games that beat the previous record of six.

A modest atmosphere hung over Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after another pre-match fan protest against chairman Daniel Levy and dissatisfaction with manager Ange Postecoglou, after a series of one victory in their last 10 home competition matches that they had left fifth at the start of the day.

Spurs, however, started clearly, with Johnson and Lucas Bergvall, problems created problems and Cristian Romero's banging header who forced keeper Aaron Ramsdale in a smart stop from a corner.

However, things could have been sour to the hosts, when Kamaldeen drifted Sulemana in the distant pole after a rare trip for the visitors, but his shot was bent to the post by Pedro Porro.

Spurs responded immediately to claim the opener and to illuminate the nerves by Johnson's 10th competition goal of the campaign.

Romero was again denied by Ramsdale when another powerful header hit the face of the former Arsenal keeper.

Bergvall thought he had doubled the leadership when he had bundled the knock-down of Home Romero from a free kick, but the Argentinian defender was supposed to have been offside after a four-minute video assistant referee (VAR) check.

Boss Postecoglou was visibly frustrated over the touchline, but cracked a smile when Johnson de Saints defenders caught their heels and threw Ramsdale.

Southampton improved after the break and dominated it, with Fernandes off the cross of Sulemana and shot through the legs Vicario in the 90th minute for a late comfort.

Ramsdale made five rescues – including fine stops from Spence and Dominic Solanke – to keep the hosts at a distance, but the penalty of Tel – after an error by Welington on Johnson – sealed the fate of Southampton with an immediate return to the championship.

On 10 points rooted on 10 points, Saints now need two more points to prevent Derby County's Record-Lage Count of 11, reached in 2007-08.

The 11th victory of Spurs of the season brought them in 13th place in the table with 37 points.
