Tottenham eye £20m goalkeeper transfer after Vicario injury and Forster blunders

Tottenham are considering a £20million move for Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford next month.

Ange Postecoglou has been given the green light to sign an EFL goalkeeper, with England back-up Trafford emerging as the target.

Spurs are in need of cover following Guglielmo Vicario's long-term injury, with veteran Fraser Forster acting as temporary No. 1 during the Italian's absence following ankle surgery. And Trafford, 22, is seen as a goalkeeper with growth who could push Vicario at White Hart Lane in the coming seasons. He is currently ahead of Sunderland's Anthony Patterson and Sheffield Wednesday rookie Pierce Charles on Spurs' wishlist.

Spurs will be hoping to have better luck at the Championship club after Newcastle failed to agree a similar deal for Trafford last summer.

Trafford has played his part in Burnley's promotion bid and was a key cog in Scott Parker's men who had the nastiest defense in the second tier. Since joining from Manchester City last summer, he has made barely 50 appearances The Clarets.

Veteran keeper Fraser Forster has replaced Vicario since the Spurs number one underwent ankle surgery, but the 36-year-old endured a dreadful night in Thursday's 4-3 win over Manchester United.

He dropped two huge players against the Red Devils to give them hope of progressing to the Carabao Cup semi-finals, only for his teammates to spare his blushes. Forster will remain between the posts when league leaders Liverpool visit North London this week, with Postecoglou defending him after the match.

The Spurs boss said: “He's disappointed too because he was excellent for us. Before then he didn't have much to do. And even in the first half I thought he was very good with his feet.

“The first one probably affected his self-confidence a bit. He lost his faith a little, and the second thing only made it worse. But he is a big boy and also someone who has stood up for us a lot during this period. I can't speak enough about him.”
