Tottenham pair do ‘Spursiest thing ever’ before Postecoglou’s men are booed off

TOTTENHAM duo Rodrigo Bentancur and Dominic Solanke left fans in stitches after a collision in the penalty area as they lined up to shoot during their 2-2 draw with Wolves.

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou came under intense pressure in the game against Wolves after consecutive defeats to Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.

They started in the bottom half of the Premier League with nine defeats from eighteen games.

And things got even gloomier for the North London fans when Hwang Hee-chan fired home to give the visitors the lead.

Bentancur leveled with a header from a corner, before the disastrous incident occurred between the Uruguayan and Solanke.

As the ball rolled across the penalty area, they both ran onto it and took each other out.

Fortunately, the flag was raised for offside in the run-up.

But that didn't stop fans from making fun of the unfortunate moment.

One said: “Solanke pushing Bentancur off the ball (or was it the other way around?) is the most Spursy thing I've ever seen.”

Another added: “That clash between Bentancur and Solanke in the box sums up our entire season lmao.”

A third replied: “If you could describe SPURS in a video… Solanke and Bentancur going for the same ball 😂.”

While a fourth replied: “The way Solanke and Bentancur tackled each other 😭😭😭 best comedy show in the world.”

Spurs took the lead through Brennan Johnson, but only conceded late through Jorgen Strand Larsen.

Postecoglou really needed a win here after a run of just one win in six league games saw his injury-hit team languish in mid-table.

It looked like he might have it after goals from Bentancur and Johnson before half-time canceled out Hwang's opener.

But Strand Larsen came to the rescue to maintain Vitor Pereira's unbeaten record since taking over.

And it left Postecoglou, whose side were booed at full-time, on shaky ground as chairman Daniel Levy watched from the stands.

Pereira has made such a rapid impact at Wolves since replacing Gary O'Neil just before Christmas that the away fans sang his name before kick-off.

However, they were already at it after seven minutes when Hwang broke the deadlock.

The South Korean started his first league match since August as reward for his killer strike against Manchester United on Boxing Day.

However, his shot showed no signs of rust as Rayan Ait-Nouri rolled a free-kick to the striker on the edge of the box and Hwang did the rest, curling in beautifully from the post.

Spurs tried to claim a foul on Johnson from Santiago Bueno in the build-up, but it seemed an optimistic claim at best.

Matheus Cunha, who won the set-piece in the first place, was Wolves' star man in a dismal campaign.

And the Brazilian showed why he is coveted by the likes of Arsenal with a number of Champions League quality tricks and flicks throughout the first half.

However, Spurs hit back five minutes later with a corner that would have charmed against Ipswich last month, even if it was overlooked as Spurs lost that match.

Just as they did against the Tractor Boys, Pedro Porro sent the delivery to the near post where Rodrigo Bentancur rose highest to smash home a header.

Spurs weren't playing well and yet they still created chances.

Radu Dragusin probably should have equalized with a header from another Porro corner that whistled the wrong side of the post.

Yves Bissouma had a blast over the crossbar when Kulusevski neatly handed him the ball.

While there was a farcical moment when Solanke and Bentancur crashed into each other in an attempt to capitalize on the same cutback from Kulusevski, who was offside anyway.

Son Heung-min has not looked good for a while, considering the great service he has provided to Spurs over the past decade.

He was anonymous here until out of nowhere he got a golden opportunity to put Spurs ahead.

Johnson was unnecessarily tripped into the box by Andre as he tried to grab Kulusevsi's lock-picking pass.

Son took the ball as a penalty taker, but just like Erling Haaland against Everton last week, the top scorer seemed to have so little confidence that you feared a miss was coming.

This was evident when his tame effort down Jose Sa's right was deflected by the Wanderers stopper.

Postecoglou must have felt that this is exactly how things are going for him now.

But then Johnson offered him a reprieve in the third minute of first-half stoppage time.

The Welshman played a one-two with the excellent Kulusevski – who at times seemed to carry Spurs with him – and then cleverly converted the return pass to make it 2-1.

Wolves were dealt a surprise blow when Cunha was part of a double-sub on half-time and was spotted shortly afterwards with ice under his left knee.

Although Postecoglou certainly couldn't believe his luck when Destiny Udogie went down with a hamstring injury, given how decimated his defense already was.

The Italian walked off gingerly and was replaced by the less spotted Sergio Reguilon, making his first competitive appearance for Spurs since April 2022.

He has since been loaned out to Atletico Madrid, Manchester United and Brentford.

The smart money is on him being shipped out permanently next month as well, although Spurs may need to assess the damage to Udogie first.

Both teams looked tired and lacked quality in a clumsy second half.

Spurs desperately tried to get the ball out, but on 87 minutes Rayan Ait-Nouri slotted in for substitute Strand Larsen, who fired the ball high into the roof of the net past Fraser Forster.

Spurs alum Matt Doherty also almost grabbed all three points for the visitors, but his header was denied by Forster.

But Strand Larsen's goal was enough for Postecoglou, who also saw Bentancur pick up a fifth yellow card of the season with a wild late tackle on Rodrigo Gomes, meaning he is now suspended for Newcastle.

When it rains, it pours.
