Tottenham sack Postecoglou despite Europa League success

Ange Postecoglou was fired by Tottenham, just over two weeks after winning the Europa League title.

The decision comes two years on the day that Postcoglou has made the switch to Spurs van Celtic.

Spurs enjoyed a miserable Premier League campaign and finished 17th in the table, but they ended their 17-year-old trophy-dried with a European triumph.

Postecoglou, who bravely claimed in September that he always wins something in his second season in a club, supported that claim, with Spurs Die Manchester United beat 1-0 in the Europa League program on 21 May.

That victory came in his 100th game that was in charge of the club, and it also ended the 40-year-old waiting of Spurs for a European trophy, after he last won the UEFA Cup in 1984.

Postecoglou is the first Premier League manager to win a large trophy and at the end of that season is fired since Antonio Conte in 2017-18 with Chelsea.

Tottenham lost 26 games in all competitions in 2024-25, their most ever in a single campaign in their history.

Twenty-two of those defeats came to the Premier League-It was only the second time they have lost so many games (after 1934-35)-with 10 of those who come home floor, their most since 1991-92 (11).

In general, Postecoglou took the lead for 101 matches and won 47 (D15 L39) and ended his term of office with a profit percentage of 46.5%.

In the Premier League, that profit percentage drops to 40.8%, with 31 wins in 76 games, with Spurs on average 1.4 points per match.

There were 3.47 goals per match in Postecoglou's Premier League matches that are responsible for Tottenham (264 in 76 matches), the highest goals-per-game ratio of a manager to take the lead over 50 or more competitions in the history of the competition.

We are very grateful for his efforts and contribution during his two years at the club.

Ange will always be remembered as only the third manager in our history to deliver a European trophy.

“After an overview of the performances and after an important reflection, the club can announce that Ange Postecoglou has been illuminated from its duties,” Spurs said in a statement.

“Ange came from Celtic in the summer of 2023 and supervised a period of change on the field, and returned us to the attacking brand of football that is traditionally associated with the club, while writing a new chapter in our history by leading us to UEFA Europa League Glory in Bilbao last month – a performance that with us all with us all.

“However, the board has unanimously concluded that it is in the best interest of the club for a change.

“Sometimes there were mitigating circumstances – injuries and then a decision to prioritize our European campaign. While this season we win the Europa League as one of the biggest moments of the club, we cannot base our decision on emotions that are tailored to this triumph.

“It is crucial that we can compete on several fronts and believe that a change in approach will give us the strongest chance for the coming season and afterwards.

“This is one of the most difficult decisions we have had to make and is not a decision that we have made light, nor a decision that we have rushed to conclude. We have taken what we believe is the right decision to give us the best chance of success, not the easy decision.

“We have a talented, young team and Ange has given us a great platform to build. We have to express our thanks to him. We wish him good for the future – he will always be welcome at our home.”

Thomas Frank van Brentford is one of the favorites to replace Postecoglou, together with Fulham manager Marco Silva and Oliver Glasner from Crystal Palace.
