Tottenham star sends shocked one-word post after Hoffenheim are awarded bizarre penalty

A Spurs star reacted on social media as a bizarre penalty was awarded to the club during their Europa League clash with Hoffenheim.

Amid dismal form in the league, Ange Postecoglou's side traveled to the Rhein-Neckar Arena to secure an automatic place in the last sixteen.

The first half went to plan for the visitors, with goals from James Maddison and Son Heung-min giving them a strong lead heading into the break.

However, Hoffenheim responded well after the restart and appeared to have found a way back into the match after Spurs goalkeeper Brandon Austin collided with Max Moerstedt while trying to divert a cross from his penalty area.

Referee Morten Krogh immediately pointed to the spot and gave Austin a yellow card, despite TV replays showing he had made contact with the ball before the collision.

As Hoffenheim were ready to take the penalty, the referee decided to check the on-field monitor as a lengthy VAR check followed.

After consultation with the VAR, the referee overturned the penalty and withdrew Austin's yellow card.

The decision proved hugely controversial online, with Spurs star Djed Spence taking to X to express his bewilderment.

He wrote: 'what??', accompanied by a few laughing emojis.

Spence, along with fellow absentees Antonin Kinsky, Sergio Reguilon and Min-hyeok Yang, were not involved in Thursday's match because he was ineligible in Europe.

Despite being offered a VAR reprieve, Spurs saw their lead halved just minutes later when Anton Stack pulled a goal back for the hosts.
