Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold has now reportedly agreed to join Real Madrid this summer.
Alexander-Arnold is one of three key players out of contract at the end of the season and the right-back has been heavily linked with a move to Madrid. The La Liga giants had a formal approach rejected by Liverpool earlier this month.
However, Madrid have not given up on the idea of signing Alexander-Arnold in the January transfer window rather than waiting until the summer where they could land the England international on a free transfer.
The Spanish giants are short of options at right-back after Dani Carvajal suffered a season-ending ACL injury, with midfielder Federico Valverde having to come on at times so far this season. And reports from Spain now say that Alexander-Arnold has 'verbally agreed' to join Madrid, but it remains to be seen whether the move will happen this month or in the summer.
Marca believes Madrid are still hopeful Liverpool will let the England international leave this month and he is the only player they are targeting in January. Manager Carlo Ancelotti remained tight-lipped when asked about potential signings.
Earlier this month he said: “January notes? It's a little more complicated to talk about this. We'll see, we'll see. Talking about this is not easy at the moment. I said we won't sign anyone.” the previous January.
“Look, I can't talk about it right now. This is not the time and the place. We'll see what will happen, but I have a great team. We have injuries and problems with that, but we are also able to deal with them to overcome.” “
There has been a lot of talk about Alexander-Arnold's future at Anfield in recent weeks, leading to concerns that the saga could have a detrimental effect on Arne Slot's side as they bid to win the Premier League title.
The Reds academy graduate, meanwhile, has insisted he will remain fully committed to Liverpool for the rest of the season, with the Reds currently four points clear at the top of the table with a game in hand.
“I want to be a Liverpool player this season (at least), that's what I will say,” Alexander-Arnold said when asked about his future. “Look, I've been at the club for 20 years now. I've signed four or five contract extensions. None of them have been played out in public, and this one won't be either.”
