Trent Alexander-Arnold’s two demands and second Real Madrid bid leaves Liverpool with headache

Liverpool have to make a decision on Trent Alexander-Arnold with Real Madrid not leaving.

The right-back has seen his contract expire and the Spanish giants are ready to pounce and have stepped up their efforts as the Reds star enters the final six months of his contract. An offer has already been rejected, but Real are willing to return.

Liverpool remain hopeful that Alexander-Arnold will opt to sign a new contract and stay at the club where he has spent his entire career. The 26-year-old was part of a hugely successful era and has outlined the circumstances that could see him stay put.

He has made it clear he wants a long-term contract, as well as a promise to make him Liverpool captain. According to talkSPORT, Alexander-Arnold has told the Anfield hierarchy that they must offer a minimum three-year contract before he will consider staying. They will also have to commit to handing him the bracelet in the 'long term'.

The current captain at Liverpool, Virgil van Dijk, is also due to expire this summer and remains in discussions with the club. It is not known how Alexander-Arnold's demand could affect the Dutchman's captaincy in his own negotiations over a new deal.

The right-back has put the ball in Liverpool's court and it is being reported in Spain that Real will return with a new offer, even though they have put a limit on how far they are willing to go, claims Cadena SER.

Real are keen to land the Englishman this month but won't break the bank on a player they can sign for free in a few months' time. Likewise, they can secure a pre-contract agreement that will secure Alexander-Arnold's signature for next season.

Liverpool currently believe their right-back will be more valuable to them in the coming months as the team competes for a number of trophies. Allowing him to leave would leave a void in their starting XI, even if they have confidence in some of their younger alternatives.

Despite the talks surrounding Alexander-Arnold, he insists he will not talk publicly about his future. “I've been at the club for 20 years now and have signed four or five contract extensions… and none of them have played out in public,” he said. “Neither will this one.”
