Tributes to lifelong Manchester City fan, 70, who died after collapsing at match

FRIENDS have paid tribute to a lifelong Manchester City fan who died after collapsing during a match.

Les Sparrow, 70, known to friends as “Budgie”, had traveled from Blackpool to the Manchester Derby with his friend Gary Brown on Sunday.

He collapsed as he entered the Etihad from Entrance K and was pronounced dead shortly after being taken to hospital.

Gary told the MEN: “He had the wickedest sense of humor and was one of the most intelligent guys I have ever met.

“He was so quick and knowledgeable about everything. He always made you laugh and have fun.

“He was a good friend to everyone and a friend for life. He would do anything for anyone.”

Gary last saw Les when he went to his seat while Les was staying with some of their friends.

The last words Les said to his thirty-year-old friend Gary were, “I'll see you soon.”

When Gary joined Les, he couldn't find him in his seat – so he texted and called him.

Gary then received a call from the hospital saying Les was in a “serious” condition before a steward told him Les had died.

Les was born in Wythenshawe before moving to Blackpool and had served as a Sapper in the Royal Engineers.

The MCFC Military Veterans Supporters group read: “We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Les Budge Sparrow.

“Les was a former Sapper who took immense pride in his service in the Royal Engineers.

“Les left us just before yesterday's match at Man City. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.

“Rest in peace, Les. Thank you for your services.'

Yesterday City said: “We are aware of the tragic news that one of our supporters has passed away following a medical incident during Sunday's match.

“The thoughts of everyone at the club are with their family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.”
