Two dead, hundreds arrested and police officer in coma during PSG celebrations

Two people died, a police officer was placed in an induced coma at night and hundreds were arrested in France, while football fans celebrated the stunning Champions League final victory of Paris Saint-Germain.

The epicenter of the euphoria was in Paris, which was a theater of car horns, cheers, singing on the street and fireworks during the night after PSG's 5-0 triumph over Inter Milan in Munich.

The ministry said that 491 people were arrested in the capital when crowds met on the Champs-Elysees Avenue and broke out with officers.

In all of France as a whole, including Paris, a total of 559 people were arrested, it added.

The two dead took place when the celebrations took place while a police officer was placed in an induced coma after he was injured by fireworks.

According to the first findings, the officer in the Normandy region in France was hit in the eye after a fireworks went off accidentally, a police souce said.

“An investigation has been opened for deliberate violence to a person in a position of government agency,” said Gauthier Poupeau, a public prosecutor for the northwestern city of Coutances.

A man who aimed at a motorcycle scooter in Paris died after he was hit by a car in the southern 15th district of the city, just a few kilometers (1.3 miles) away from the Champs-Elysees.

In the southwestern city of Dax, a 17-year-old boy was deadly stabbed in a collection of the PSG victory, said prosecutors.

His death took place shortly after the game and “during the parties”, but the office of the public prosecutor said it didn't know if it was related to the final of the Champions League. It added that the perpetrator was “on the run”.

The PSG team would hold a victory parade on the Champs-Elysees on Sunday, with tens of thousands of supporters to gather to collect a glimpse of their recurring heroes.

At night, however, AFP journalists saw the police on the famous passage with a water cannon to prevent a crowd from reaching the Arc de Triomphe at the top of the Champs-Elysees.

“Recovery boosts on the Champs-Elysees wanted to create incidents and came into contact with the police repeatedly by throwing large fireworks and other objects,” the police said in a statement.

Elsewhere, the police said that a car made career in fans who celebrated the victory of PSG in Grenoble in southeastern France, causing four people to be injured, two of them seriously. All those pain were from the same family, the police said.

The driver gave himself to the police and was arrested. A source close to the investigation said that the driver had not acted intentionally.

The office of the public prosecutor said that the driver had tested negatively for alcohol and drugs.

'Day of Glory'

The majority of fans celebrated peacefully, but the police in Paris said that Scuffles broke out near the Champs-Elysees Avenue, and around PSG's Parc des Princes Stadium, where 48,000 had viewed the 5-0 win over huge screens.

Most of those who were arrested in the capital were suspected of illegal possession of fireworks and causing disorder, the police said.

The PSG victory meant that the club won the biggest prize for European club football for the first time in their history.

A 20-year-old PSG supporter, Clement, said: “It is so good and deserved! We have a song that talks about our struggles and it has not always been easy.

“But we have returned our confidence this year with a team without stars. They are 11 boys who play for each other.”

The office of French President Emmanuel Macron said he would organize the victorious players to congratulate them on Sunday.

In a message on X, Macron greeted a “day of glory for PSG”.

Mayor Anne Hidalgo of Paris greeted it as a “historical” victory.

A total of 11.5 million people coordinated throughout France to watch the competition, according to figures from the Mediametry target group company and one of the broadcasters, Canal+.
