Uefa ready to open talks over shock rule change after controversial penalty

UEFA ready to open conversations about a shock control change after the punishment of Julian Alvarez was controversially rejected against Real Madrid.

The Spanish derby went to a shootout in the Champions League last 16 after Atletico won 1-0 on the night to level 2-2 on total.

But controversy struck when former Manchester City star Alvarez slid while he took his spot kick.

His efforts entered, but was soon thrown away and overturned to a miss after the repetitions revealed that the slip led him to touch the ball twice before it entered.

It has violated UEFA's rules on penalties, but after Atletico had imposed an appeal, the administrative body ruled that the provision could be viewed and changed.

UEFA said in a statement: “Atletico de Madrid inquired at UEFA about the incident, which led to the disconnection of the kick of the penalty taken by Julian Alvarez at the end of the UEFA Champions League match against Real Madrid.

“Although at least, the player made contact with the ball with his standing foot before kicking him, as shown in the attached video clip.

“According to the current rule (laws of the game, law 14.1), the VAR should call the referee who had to be the goal was not allowed.

“UEFA will discuss FIFA and IFAB to determine whether the rule should be assessed in cases where a double touch is clearly unintentionally.”

Madrid progressed 4-2 on penalties with former Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger scored the decisive place.

But if Alvarez had counted, Atletico would have had one last penalty to bring the game to sudden death.

Atletico manager Diego Simeone rumbled in the press conference after the game.

He said: “Don't be afraid to speak. Are you afraid because you are being punished?

'If you are scared, say nothing. Stir your hand if you think Julian is correct twice. Nobody? Nobody. Okay.

“To be honest, I will not lie to you, because I will be eliminated as we have been, is not easy to accept.”

Simeone continued: “I just saw the image of the penalty.

“The referee said that when Julian stepped and kicked, he touched the ball with his foot, but the ball did not move.

“That is something to discuss whether it was a goal or not, but I am proud of my players.

“When he plants and kicks his foot, the ball doesn't even move a little bit. But if VAR called it, I have never seen a penalty called by VAR, but it is still valid, and they have seen that he touched it.

“I want to believe they have seen that he touched it.”

Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti said: “I think they had already discovered it at the VAR when we hesitated.

“We didn't warn them, at least because I didn't know myself. I saw the repetition and I think he touches him with his left foot, the second touch.”
