Edoardo Bove health update: Cause of collapse during Serie A clash ‘is revealed’
The cause of Edoardo Bove's shocking collapse on the pitch during a Serie A match has been revealed, according to reports.
Midfielder Bove collapsed and was taken off the pitch in an ambulance during his side's Serie A match against Inter Milan at the Stadio Artemio Franchi on Sunday evening.
Bove, 22, went down untouched in the 16th minute, with referee Daniele Doveri stopping the match to give him treatment.
The match was quickly suspended and the players returned to their dressing rooms while Bové was transported from the stadium and to hospital.
However, Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport has revealed that the player suffered a 'cardiac arrest' during the match, which is believed to have been the cause of the incident.
According to reports, a defibrillator was used to restart his heart before he was taken to the intensive care unit at Careggi Hospital in Florence. He has now been transferred to a new department.
A report from La Gazzetta details the 'continuous' tests he has been carrying out on his heart while in hospital where he is 'awake and alert'.
It is believed cardiologists are reviewing his medical history to determine if there was a pre-existing condition, which could have left “some marks” without directly causing Sunday's collapse.
For example, it is reported that the 'mild myocarditis' – a condition where the heart muscle can become inflamed – caused by a Covid diagnosis four years ago is unlikely to have left any marks on his heart.
The tests Bove is said to have undergone include a CT scan and a cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) study, which could help determine if there is tissue that could cause an arrhythmia that could trigger a similar episode to Sunday's collapse .
In an update on his condition on Monday, Fiorentina said: 'ACF Fiorentina announced that, after a restful night, Edoardo Bove was awakened and extubated this morning. He is currently awake, alert and oriented.
“He has spoken to his family, the club management, the coach and his teammates, who all rushed to visit him as soon as they heard the good news. Further tests will be carried out in the coming days to determine what led to yesterday's critical situation.
“The doctors at Careggi University Hospital treating the player have confirmed that diagnostic tests are underway. Fiorentina would like to thank Careggi University Hospital and all doctors and staff for the great humanity and professionalism they have shown.
'The club would also like to thank the wider Fiorentina family and the entire football world who have shown their great sympathy and care at this difficult time through their messages and support, which have been a great comfort to both the club and Edoardo. and his family.'
For Edoardo Bove, the second night in the intensive care unit of the Careggi hospital was peaceful. Should improvements continue, the player, who has undergone clinical tests over the past 36 hours, could be transferred to the cardiology department of the hospital in Florence.
Concerned Fiorentina and Inter players formed a shield around Bove as he was treated on the pitch before being taken to hospital in an ambulance.
Fiorentina club president Rocco Commisso said on Sunday evening: 'Forza Edoardo, we are behind you. You are a strong boy with a great character. During these moments we will contact the boy's family.'
Bove, a product of Roma's youth system, joined Fiorentina from the Giallorossi in August on a season-long loan with an option to buy.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Bove regained consciousness after arriving at Careggi Hospital in Florence and doctors assured him that his 'life was not in danger'.
One of the first to arrive at the hospital was Captain Cristiano Biraghi. He was accompanied by Martinez Quarta. Danilo Cataldi, one of the first players to help Bove when he collapsed on the pitch, also visited the hospital.
Rolando Mandragora, Pietro Terracciano, Luca Ranieri and Dodo were also seen in hospital, while several other players headed to the medical facility to show their support.
La Gazzetta dello Sport also revealed that Bove's parents and girlfriend were all present that evening and later traveled to hospital to visit the Fiorentina star.
They reported that father Giovanni and girlfriend Martina immediately went to the hospital. Meanwhile, his mother Tanya collapsed at the stadium after the incident.
After regaining consciousness, she later traveled to the hospital with Florence Mayor Sara Funaro.
Shortly after the incident took place on Sunday afternoon, Inter Milan released a statement saying: 'The match has been suspended due to a medical emergency.'
Inter president Giuseppe Marotta spoke about the incident shortly after it occurred. He said: “Inter and the entire football world express their solidarity with the family of Bove and Fiorentina.
'The decision to postpone the match came spontaneously from everyone, we are a community, all players and even the referee were emotionally involved. We hope it is nothing serious.”
While a Serie A statement read: 'The match will not resume and will be postponed to a date to be determined. When play was stopped, Bove collapsed to the ground and the situation immediately seemed very serious. An ambulance has taken the player, we are waiting for news.'
