The reign of Jon Jones while UFC Heavyweight Champion continues to dominate the MMA discourse.
Jones has only defended the heavyweight title once in the two years that he has held him. This came under controversial circumstances, where 'Bones' criticized the fight against Stipe Miocic about interim champion Tom Aspinall.
But despite the fact that the Miocic competition is in the past, Jones Aspinall and their long-awaited unification confrontation will continue to reject.
This means that furious fans led Jones either against Aspinall or give up the heavyweight championship.
Amanda Nunes gives her calls to strip Jon Jones from the UFC heavyweight title
Former two-division UFC champion Amanda Nunes is in New Jersey for the UFC 316 event on Saturday.
There Julianna Pena and Kayla Harrison will fight for the title of the Bantam weight for women. Either Pena or Harrison will be the comeback opponent of Nunes, according to all accounts.
'The Lioness' chose surprisingly to walk away from her reign as a 'Champ camp' after defending the 135 pound title against Irene Aldana in June 2023.
Many quickly predicted a return of retirement, and the wheels are now moving to flourish that in 2025.
Speaking during a UFC fan Q&A in Newark, Nunes was asked if Jones should be stripped of the heavyweight title.
The Brazilian quoted her personal experience of running away from UFC Gold while she decided to do her future and Jones advised to do the same.
“You know, I would take that for me too. If I didn't retire, I would have stopped the division,” said Nunes. “I could have stayed, but I couldn't have fighted.
“I would have waited for a year and a half for the belt and the girls would just wait for me until I had the answers. So I just retired.
“I know I can get the belt back whenever I want, and I just retired and come back later,” Nunes added. “Maybe he (Jones) can (lose) that belt and then see what happens later.”
Petition for UFC to strip Jon Jones surpasses 185,000 signatures
A few weeks after the creation, the fan petition that the UFC evokes to remove Jones from the heavyweight throne remains an eye-opening number of supporters.
After about 20,000 in the first week, the petition has since risen past the milestone after milestone. It went the most recently further than 185,000 signatures and seems to be hit 200,000 quickly enough.
“Jon Jones is now the longest reigning champion in the heavyweight history of UFC and has only fought twice in that period,” is the 'issue' section of the petition.
“There is a clear interim champion, Tom Aspinall, who has defended his interim championship belt. Aspinall is ready to fight Jones. Jones refuses to fight against him.
“That is why we, as fans Dana White, must let us know: it's time to strip Jon Jones from the heavyweight title. He clearly has no intentions to fight quickly.”
Jones tried to laugh at the petition online and to insist that he could not give anything to calls to be stripped, given the past that he drops the UFC -light heavyweight belt.
Instead of signing some petition, I need at least 200 essays of five pages of TA fans around the world. Double divided, MLA layout. Convince me. My team will choose their favorites and contact you … Ultimately.
