United still expect Sporting success under Amorim, says Fernandes

Captain Bruno Fernandes of Manchester United has said that the club still expects head coach Ruben Amorim to recreate the success that he has reached Sporting in Portugal.

Amorim joined Manchester United in November and left the leadership after four and a half years and had won two league titles.

The 40-year-old took 231 games in all matches on Sporting and had a profit percentage of 71%. The competition title he won with them in 2021 was their first in 19 years, while he won the Primeira Liga again in 2023-24.

In United, he has only won 11 games of 26 since he became a member, but Fernandes has not given the confidence to him.

“I knew that the way sport played, I knew the fans were excited and the players were very happy with him [Amorim] There, “Fernandes said about Amorim while speaking with CBS Sports.

'I think we all saw in the last game that he had there [at Sporting] How much togetherness was there with the players and the staff at that time.

“Me and my teammates and the technical staff, including the manager, want to create that again. To make it clear that we clearly need trophies.”

United finished eighth in the Premier League last season, which ended their worst competition position since the 13th in 1989-90. Although he is on track this season, co-owner Jim Ratcliffe has said that Amorim will stay “a long time” in the club.

In the meantime, Fernandes understands how well Amorim is in their shared home country and although he suggested that they had no special relationship, their couple have a household name after the latter said that United “needs more Brunos”.

“I would not say that we are pretty close,” Fernandes said. “We don't speak much to be honest. He is a manager who is very, very quiet … It is clear that the captain often comes to me most of the things he wants to pass on to the team, but many other times do not even come from him, but from his staff.

“It is clear that we have a good relationship, but I would not say that it is different from any other player. I knew the things he did during sport, but it was not someone I knew personally.”
