Van Basten believes their inconsistency can be resolved by adding more Italian talent to Paulo Fonseca's squad.
The Dutchman said: “Milan is a great club, it has a fantastic stadium and great fans. Unfortunately, Inter have 'ruled' in recent years and that is a blow to the hearts of the Milan fans. Difficult times.
“I am convinced that Milan will return to winning ways. Maybe having more Italians on the team could help.
“There are some good players, but the team doesn't use them much and the national team suffers as a result. In Spain, for example, they appreciate their talent more.”
