Van Dijk move blocked as Arne Slot wants Real Madrid star

It's almost 2025 and for Liverpool fans it promises to be a year for the ages.

Arne Slot's men sit comfortably at the top of both the Premier League and Champions League, with the potential to win a quadruple three years after Jurgen Klopp's Reds came agonizingly close. But Slot will know that Liverpool cannot rest on their laurels and must continue to improve and achieve results, such as Sunday's 5-0 win over West Ham.

That improvement could come through new signings, with Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes yet to make his first big move. But the Reds don't want to go backwards either, and that's what the departures of Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold could do.

Here's a round-up of the latest transfer news from Anfield.

Inter Milan cools Van Dijk's interest

Liverpool are unlikely to lose captain Virgil van Dijk to Inter Milan, who have dithered over the centre-back's wages. The 33-year-old Van Dijk is approaching the end of his contract and can freely negotiate with clubs from Wednesday 1 January.

Inter had seen the Dutch international as a replacement for compatriot Stefan de Vrij, who is also approaching the final six months of his contract. But according to Inter Live, Van Dijk's annual salary has prevented the Italian champions from making a move.

Slot focuses on Real Madrid star Tchouameni

Arne Slot wants to do what Jürgen Klopp could not: bring Aurelien Tchouameni to Liverpool. The Frenchman was closely linked with a move to Anfield in 2022, before joining Real Madrid.

Tchouameni currently plays as a makeshift centre-back for Madrid, but Fichajes report that Slot wants to use the 24-year-old to strengthen his midfield. Liverpool missed out on Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi during the summer transfer window and relied on the in-form Ryan Gravenberch in the No.6 role.

Salah offers contract update

Mo Salah insists his focus is on helping Liverpool win the Premier League title. The winger, 32, has not been shy in discussing his future at Anfield and confirmed in November that he had not yet been offered a new contract.

Speaking to Sky Sports after his only goal and two assists against West Ham, Salah said: “We are still a long way from it [agreeing a new deal]. I don't want to put something in the media and people start saying things, but nothing has actually happened. Now I'm focusing on the team and hopefully we win the Premier League.”
