Virgil van Dijk was praised for his stylish gesture, just after Liverpool lost the Carabao Cup final.
Van Dijk grabbed the winner against Chelsea to conquer the trophy 12 months ago.
But this time he was on the losing side when an unbridled Newcastle wiped the Reds aside to end their 70-year waiting time for a trophy.
Former ASDA employee Dan Burn had the freedom of the penalty area to thunder a header home just before the break.
Seven minutes after the break, Alexander Isak wiped in an excellent second.
Federico Chiesa took a late consolation deep in injury time after VAR proved that he was on the side.
But it was too late for Liverpool, just a few days after he was dumped from the Champions League on penalties to PSG.
Despite the painful defeat, Van Dijk, however, took time out of his misery to congratulate the newly crowned champions.
Ex-liverpool left back Stephen Warnock said on BBC Radio 5 Live: “There was a hug between Virgil van Dijk and then Burn.
“Van Dijk stood by the Newcastle Huddle – he went around and shook the hand of every player.

“He respected what Newcastle did today.
“Class. A sign of respect for Newcastle.”
Just like Van Dijk, another legendary Liverpool-Centrum-Back was full of admiration for the Magpies of Eddie Howe.
He said on Sky Sports: “Newcastle did not only win today, they have battered Liverpool.
“I find it difficult to be too critical, given what Liverpool looks like they are going to reach.
“Newcastle is a great Premier League team and they have wiped the floor today.”
The three most famous fans of Newcastle – Ant, DEC and Alan Shearer – were all in the stands in Wembley to see that their beloved club won their first trophy since the FA Cup in 1955.
And Ant had viewers in stitches while he was wearing a Jason Tindall scarf.
Howe's notorious NO2 even managed to be the fourth person of the Newcastle quota to get hold of the trophy in hilarious scenes.
