Van Dijk set his sights on the second leg at Anfield after tonight’s defeat

Lucas Bergvall's late winner decided Wednesday night's match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with the goal coming moments after the Spurs midfielder escaped a second yellow card for a foul on Kostas Tsimikas.

The Reds' unbeaten run was therefore halted after 24 games and when Van Dijk was asked by Sky Sports to explain what led to just the second defeat of the season, the captain said: “We were clearly playing against an intense team with good attacking players. They can make things difficult for you, they keep running.

“I think we created good moments [and] sometimes good chances – not really clear chances in my opinion, but still enough to score.

“Unfortunately we didn't do that. It's quite cliché, but it's half time now and I'm looking forward to the game at Anfield.”

Van Dijk continued: “I'm not sure if we had a level or two [below our best] but obviously sometimes I think we could have done better.

“But that's also part of football: you try to play your best game ever, every one of us, and sometimes we played them through nicely and created some one-on-ones on the side and created some dangerous moments.

“But they were able to defend it much better than when we played here a few weeks ago. And yes, we move on – we take it on the chin.

“Like I said, it's half time and we've still got over 90 minutes to go and like I said, I'm really looking forward to it.”
