VAR was never going to overturn controversial Everton pen against Arsenal, says ex-Premier League ref as Arteta fumes

Former Premier League referee Mark Halsey insists that Var would never destroy the controversial fine of Everton against Arsenal.

Mikel Arteta remained strange when his Gunners side lost more ground in the title race with a 1-1 draw in Goodison Park.

Leandro Trossard gave the visitors to Merseyside for the break.

But minutes in the second 45, Iliman Ndiaye Everton fired back on flat terms of the penalty spot.

Myles Lewis-Skelly was punished for an error on Jack Harrison, despite repetitions that suggest that it was a 50/50 and perhaps not even took place in the box.

But only speaking on Sunsport, the former Premier League Ref Halsey revealed why there was no chance that the decision would ever be destroyed.

He said: “Darren England admitted a fine of the second half when Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly was assessed to have contaminated Jack Harrison in the 1-1 draw of the Gunners in Everton.

“They were both faltering for the ball and it was difficult to see who polluted who – or that there was an error at all – with contact that also started well outside the penalty area.

“No Everton player appealed to a penalty – Harrison came back immediately to play the ball – but Var Stuart Attwell would never recommend a review because it was not a clear and obvious mistake.

“It was one of those subjective phone calls that when things go against you, you will certainly feel hard done by. And if it wasn't received, it would certainly not have been given.”

Arsenal -Baas Mikel Arteta certainly kept raging after he had given Liverpool the chance to clearly move 14 points.

He said: “I have seen it 15 times. In my opinion, that is not a way to make a penalty.

“There is no doubt that, apart from that, they had nothing else, but that clearly changes the momentum and the result completely.

“I think we earn more, but that is what we got at the end. We had two big chances to win the game, we didn't convert them, so we have to accept the point.”
