Former Manchester United -defender Raphael Varane has opened his often 'tense' and 'complicated' relationship with Erik ten Hag, which he believes 'wanted to get respect through fear'.
The Frenchman remembered a 'robust' discussion with the former Red Devils manager who preceded an extensive and inexplicable enchantment on the sidelines.
Varane, who was forced into early retirement only four months after leaving Old Trafford last May, said that the Dutchman always had to be in a conflict and revealed that his connection was the team 'no longer existed' after the FA Cup Final victory on Manchester City.
“It's hard to find the right words. It was sometimes very tense, “he told athletics. “Sometimes he did to listen to the feedback of the players. Sometimes he made decisions without listening to the feelings of the players. So there were ups and downs. It was sometimes complicated. '
The tenure period of ten HAG in Manchester United was interrupted by controversial collisions with Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho. The former Ajax boss dropped out with the first few short months in his reign after the Portuguese refused to continue as a replacement in a match against Tottenham.
Ronaldo then accused ten hag of not showing him respect in a bomb interview with Piers Morgan, which led to his united contract that was terminated in November 2022.
Sancho has since been removed from the first team training after he had beaten his manager on social media after claims from the coach that his training performances were sub-par.
The wing player insisted that ten Hag lied over his displays and refused to apologize, which resulted in his exile of the first team and the subsequent movements to Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea.
While Varane acknowledged that his problems with the Dutchman were not on the same scale as his former teammates, the 31-year-old opened his own run with the manager, who did not explain him for an extensive absence of the team after the couple 'some truths “Had shared.
“We had a robust discussion,” he said. 'We told each other a few truths, but then I didn't play for almost two months.
“I said I didn't agree with certain ways to do things about the relationship between him and the team. It wasn't something I thought it was good for the team, because some players were not satisfied at all. It was not good at terms of the relationship with the coach. '
Varane's longest non-injury related enchantment of the team came by the end of 2023 when he only played 18 minutes in the Premier League between mid-October and December.
In an interview with the French outlet L'Equipe last year, Varane admitted that he wanted to stay in Old Trafford after the expiry of his contract, that a moderately successful three -year -old Stint concluded after his £ 42 million move from Real Madrid.
However, he realized that the wind had arrived in Manchester, he chose to walk away after a striking last game in the FA Cup final victory over City. Much of the structure of the Wembley collision was dominated by the uncertainty about the future of Ten Hag.
And the Dutchman would eventually keep his job, at least a few months, after the stunning victory, but Varane believes that this was a mistake and was surprised that the Dutchman survived the heel.
He added: “The connection with the group no longer existed.”
Fortunes in Old Trafford have only deteriorated since the departure of ten Hag, where the club falls to their eighth competition – the defeat under new boss Ruben Amorim – their 12th general – in the 1-0 defeat of Sunday by Tottenham.
The Red Devils are 15th in the top flight for matches against Everton and Ipswich.
