Viktor Gyokeres’ private thoughts on working with Ruben Amorim again at Man Utd
Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres would love a sensational reunion with Ruben Amorim at Manchester United.
Gyokeres, 26, established himself as one of the best centre-forwards in Europe while playing under the new United head coach in Portugal. Last year, the Swede contributed 43 goals and 15 assists in all competitions as Sporting powered their way to the Primeira Liga title.
With Amorim having left the Jose Alvalade Stadium, the former Coventry City striker has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford. It is understood that Gyokeres has a release clause of around £83m, but Sporting could consider bids closer to £66m, although that will depend on how intense the battle for his services becomes. Rivals such as Arsenal and Chelsea are also admirers.
While Sporting may have made their demands clear, Gyokeres has so far remained neutral when asked about a possible reunion with the 39-year-old new United boss. However, reports from Italy indicate that Gyokeres would like to team up with Amorim again and return to England.
Sky Sports reporter Gianluca Di Marzio said on behalf of MyBettingSites.co.uk: “Amorim is a very good and smart manager. The first thing a smart coach should do is take a good look at the players he has in the squad, so there goes he will use it for in the coming months.
“The players get the chance to show what they can do. But of course he will do everything he can to get Gyokeres.
“Next summer he will be the striker and everyone will try to get him. Napoli tried to get him before they signed Lukaku but the price is higher now.”
“I think Gyokeres could go to Manchester United because he knows the manager and it seems like the perfect wedding somehow. There is no deal at the moment but both Amorim and Gyokeres would be very happy to work together again .”
United currently have Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund as centre-forwards, while Marcus Rashford led the charge in Amorim's first match against Ipswich Town, scoring in the 1-1 draw. Hojlund impressed in Amorim's first game at Old Trafford, contributing a brace and a determined assist in the 3-2 home win over Norwegian side FK Bodo/Glimt – but Swedish superstar Gyokeres would certainly be a step up in quality.
After the match, Denmark international Hojlund made it clear that he thinks he will thrive in Amorim's new system. In a post-match interview he said: “I think the new system and new ideas suit my playing style.
“I'm still trying to do the same, but it's clear that now we play a different kind of football and a different system. I've played this kind of football, I'm not saying it's the same, but a 3-4-3, I It used to be a bit the same in Atlanta.
“I just try to do my job every time I step on the pitch. I think last season, as the team's top scorer, I showed that I can score goals. I'm still very young, but of course I would like to want to do.” take responsibility and that's why I also took shirt No. 9 this year because I think I want to take it to the next level and the next step.
“But yeah, I still have a lot of growing to do. I'm still not the finished article. I'm only 21. I think I've improved in the kind of holding and playing with my back to the goal, and I think it comes with the years. Last year I had to learn the Premier League and this stuff every time I stepped foot on the pitch.”
