Villa in talks with Dortmund to sign Malen – but they see opening offer rebuffed

Aston Villa is in talks with Borussia Dortmund about a move for Dutch striker Donyell Malen.

Negotiations between the two clubs continue after Villa's opening offer of £15 million plus bonuses fell short of the £25 million the Bundesliga side wants to receive.

This week, Mail Sport revealed that Unai Emery's side had reignited their interest in the 25-year-old.

Malen can play across the front line, mainly on the right wing, and would give Villa extra pace, depth and quality for Emery in attacking positions.

The Dutch international still has an eighteen-month contract at the Westfalenstadion.

Malen also has a strong bond with Villa left-back Ian Maatsen, the two having played together at Dortmund and through the national team.

Malen started out in Ajax's youth academy before joining Arsenal, where he rose through the youth team to the first-team reckoning and featured in their pre-season tour to Australia in 2017, but was subsequently sold to PSV Eindhoven in August.

He excelled in the Netherlands, scoring 40 league goals in just over 80 appearances before being snapped up by Dortmund.

Malen has scored five goals this season, including one in Dortmund's 3-1 win over Wolfsburg last weekend.
