The herons start the 2025 ml season with a hard-fought point in Chase Stadium.
Inter Miami started life under Javier Mascherano with a 2-2 draw against New York City FC. The new head coach made the team considerable changes that won the supporters -shield last year, but remains one important component: Lionel Messi.
Although he did not score, Messi offered two sharp assists to ensure that Miami avoided an embarrassing defeat of the opening day for home support.
Inter Miami started the game well with their opening goal of the 2025 ml season after just five minutes. Messi took a corner with a corner kick and shot in the NYCFC box, received the ball behind the line of defense and quadrafulates the ball for Tomás Avilés to tap home.
Young defender Avilés has yielded a reputation for results game during his time in MLS, but he can't feel a bit of a shame about the latest card in his collection. With 21 minutes on the clock, Avilés was caught one-on-one with Alonso Martinez and made a somewhat messy challenge on the edge of his own box. The young person seemed to touch the ball before he brought Martinez to the floor, but the referee considered it an error and Avilés got his marching orders.
Inter Miami makes late comeback
NYCFC then scored from a neatly edited movement of the resulting free kick, before Martinez added a second early in the second half. Inter Miami lost at home in the season opener, Mascherano was stimulated in action.
At the hourmark, Luis Suarez was withdrawn and replaced by Telasco Segovia, the attacking midfielder who arrived in the low season. Miami struggled with ten men, but struggled to produce clear opportunities, although Federico Redondo wasted an opening that was carved by Messi and Jordi Alba.
Lionel Messi had played the full 90 minutes on Wednesday in the Concacaf Champions Cup match against Sporting Kansas City and he was also needed for the duration on Saturday. Deep in the 11 minutes of added time, Ian Fray loaded on the field and found Messi lurking in the space in the NYCFC half.
Messi took the ball and drove forward, stopped opponents for the ball to Segovia. The new signing lifted the ball cool over Matt Freese to level the game and secure a point for Miami.
It was not the most exciting version to start a new era in Chase Stadium, but Mascherano will be happy to have avoided the defeat to start his reign. The herons were not helped by the early decision decision of the red card, but there remains a lack of attacking creativity, further than that of Messi.
After the game, however, Mascherano did not seem to worry too much about the dependence on his countryman's team: “He is like a child that plays and he doesn't want to lose.”
“So for us it is a big, big advantage. So we have to keep him with this spirit because it is not just what he is doing on the field, it is what he translates to his teammates and everything he does with his 37 years … so it's beautiful. “
