Wayne Rooney reveals decision behind documentary covering Plymouth Argyle with filming already underway

Plymouth Argyle boss Wayne Rooney has revealed why the club will feature in a new documentary.

The Championship side are the latest team to allow cameras behind the scenes to provide a fascinating insight into the club. The documentary will probably be shown next summer.

Other teams to have featured in documentaries in recent years include Manchester City, Arsenal, Tottenham, Sunderland and Wrexham.

Former Manchester United and England star Rooney has been in charge of Plymouth since May.

It is Rooney's fourth managerial job after spells at Derby, DC United and Birmingham.

Some footage for the documentary has already been filmed during Plymouth's win at home to Portsmouth and away to Derby, with much of the focus on Rooney's involvement with the club.

Rooney stressed he is keen to ensure the cameras do not distract players as they prepare for games.

Rooney told Plymouth Live: “It has to be at the right times. Anything that we think could impact players on match day, that access won't be there.

'I think it happens anyway these days, most clubs have their own internal cameras almost everywhere, so I don't think it's any different or a shock to the players to have cameras around.

'Once they get used to it, it's no longer a problem. I think it will be very interesting for the fans to get a better understanding.

'Of course the fans see the players going on the pitch and playing the games, but in reality they see the preparation of what happens all week before the match day, and the work the players put in and how much the players care. how much we all care about getting results.”

Rooney stated that Plymouth will benefit financially from the documentary, while the club's popularity could also increase further.

He said: “They are not there every minute of the day. There will be set days when we have them filmed. It won't be a huge difference for the players or staff to deal with. I think it will be good for the club. I know big brands are looking at taking it on board, we'll have to wait and see where that goes.”

'I think it will definitely help the club financially, which is very important for us with where we are now, but also as a fan of the club I think it's something that I would be very interested in looking at to watch. Of course you have to take everything into account and we felt that the positive aspects far outweighed the negative aspects.'

Plymouth currently sit 18th in the Championship, with Rooney having four wins, four draws and seven defeats to his name so far this season.

Rooney's team will be back in action on Friday evening with a home match against Watford.

In 2015, Rooney starred in a documentary entitled 'Rooney: The Man Behind the Goals' while giving a camera crew access to his family home.

His wife Coleen is currently starring in I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!
