Weather warning puts Liverpool – Manchester United clash at risk

The Premier League match could be postponed if the snow on Merseyside continues until Saturday evening.

Liverpool's much-anticipated Premier League match against Manchester United is under threat after parts of the northwest of England were put under an orange weather warning on Saturday.

Severe weather conditions hit Merseyside on Saturday evening, with a three-day warning for snow. Liverpool residents reported snowfall on Saturday night and as much as 5cm of snow is expected across northern England.

This puts the match between Liverpool and Manchester United in jeopardy. Modern football pitches can often withstand even the toughest winter conditions, but the situation around the stadium – with an expected capacity of 61,000 spectators – will be a concern for authorities.

What happens if Liverpool – Manchester United is postponed?

Liverpool are currently at the top of the Premier League, their position further strengthened on Saturday with draws against rivals Arsenal and Chelsea. A win over United would put Liverpool eight points ahead of Arsenal, while Arne Slot's side still had played one game less.

That upcoming match is a Merseyside Derby meeting with Everton, which was postponed after strong winds prevented the match from going ahead in December. Liverpool's trip to Everton still has to be fitted into a busy schedule.

If the match against Manchester United is also postponed, Liverpool will have to deal with large crowds on the playing field in the coming months. They still play in the Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup and will be reluctant to rest players in the Premier League with a title in their sights. Slot has managed to rotate his squad brilliantly so far this season, but another delay could deplete his resources.
