When is Javier Mascherano’s first game as Inter Miami head coach?
The 40-year-old will take over from former team-mate Lionel Messi, adding another ex-Barcelona name to the Herons' star-studded squad.
Javier Mascherano has been officially named the new head coach of Inter Miami, setting up a reunion with Lionel Messi and the other ex-Barcelona stars.
The 40-year-old replaces former boss Tata Martino, who left the club shortly after the shock play-off defeat to Atlanta United. Mascherano has signed a three-year contract that will see him through the 2027 MLS season.
Commenting on the appointment, managing owner Jorge Mas said: “This job requires someone with the experience to maximize our unique pool of talent – from our global superstars, to our fast-growing homegrown players, to our young international prospects and everything in between. ”
Mascherano has coached Argentina's Under-20 and Under-23 teams, but has no senior management experience. What he does have is a great career as a player.
After breaking through with Argentine giants River Plate, he represented Liverpool and Barcelona in Europe, winning five LaLiga titles and two Champions Leagues with the latter.
“Throughout his career as one of the best players in the world and as an experienced coach, Javier has always demonstrated what makes him great: ruthless determination with the knowledge, instincts and understanding to back it up. We are very pleased to welcome him to lead our team,” said Miami co-owner David Beckham.
Mascherano has three months to prepare for the start of the 2025 MLS season, which is expected to start in late February. His first competitive match in charge of the Herons will be the 2025 season opener, but the club is likely to organize a substantial schedule of pre-season fixtures to allow the new man to get to know his squad.
