The UEFA Champions League campaign from Arsenal will continue tonight while they are confronted with PSV Eindhoven in the first stage of their round of 16 knockout tie. The Gunners traveled to the Netherlands for the competition, which will be held in the Philips Stadium of Eindhoven.
Arsenal went to the knockout phase of the competition in third place in the league table, after they have won six of their eight games. After their 2-1 victory over Girona in January, the side of Mikel Arteta was behind only leaders Liverpool and Barcelona.
Their Dutch opponents tonight ended the competition phase in 14th place. Their last victory of the Champions League, however, was a 3-2 victory over Liverpool-De Ohere defeat of the Reds in the competition so far.
Arsenal and PSV also met last season, which ended in a emphatic 4-0 win for the Gunners in their first season in the European top flight since the 2016/17 season. In anticipation of tonight, Arteta said that his side needs what is needed to make progress, despite losing attackers, including Bukayo Saka and Kai Havertz to injury.
Speaking with Sky Sports, he said: “This year we have been much more consistent. We have scored many goals and have only admitted the lowest expected goals in the competition. That is a large platform. We have those resources, that is what the team has already done. Now we have to keep doing it.”
The winner after next week's second stage will be confronted with Real Madrid of Atlético Madrid in the quarterfinals. In contrast to the majority of the Champions League luminaires, PSV vs Arsenal will not be shown on TNT sports, but there is still a way to see the game completely free.
